Chilliwack Fraser Canyon EDA Meeting
For those within the Chilliwack Fraser Canyon Electoral District, now is the time to get involved..
Here is the letter I got from the EDA CEO.
Hello Green Party members and supporters,
Here we are at the beginning of a new year, facing a new decade together.
I hope you all had a good holiday and had ample time to think about the dismal failure of the Copenhagen COP15 and its global implications.
I am scheduling a Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon Federal Green Party Association General Meeting for Thursday, Jan. 28th at 7:00 PM at 45569 Wells Rd in Sardis. Just reply to this e-mail if you need directions.
This will be a crucially important meeting. There is no set agenda, because it is time for all of you who have been absent and silent to step up to the plate right now and begin taking some responsibility for the future of your local riding’s federal Green Party activities.
This message is also official notification that our third Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday evening, February 25th at 7:00 PM at 45569 Wells Rd in Sardis. All Executive positions are open for nominations for the annual elections that will be held that evening, including the offices of CEO and Financial Agent and all Directors-at-Large. Depending on volunteer response, this might be your only notification for this upcoming February 25th AGM, so pay close attention to what follows.
Please be assured that I will definitely NOT be running for a third term as CEO unless you attend the January 28th meeting and adequately demonstrate that enough of us have decided it is time to take Green politics seriously. Ed Baye and I need to see sufficient evidence of both your individual and your group commitment.
If there is insufficient response, I will suggest to Ed that we consider dissolving the EDA and transferring the $3,250 we have in our Treasury to either Ed Baye’s campaign here or to Elizabeth May’s campaign in the Saanich-Gulf Island riding.
This is your big opportunity to reshape the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon Greens and try a new approach, if that’s what you think is appropriate. I advise you to consider these words carefully.
Very, very sincerely,
Michael Clarke, CEO
Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon Greens
If you would like to get involved you can use the contact info under your riding to get the phone number and email.
When we have 3-4 people coming to an EDA meeting for months on end.. It truely discurages the people involved...
What do you have to lose here??

Michael, keep us informed
Michael, do keep the rest of us informed as to what happens. It would be a tragedy if the EDA folds. I really hope that you get the turn out that you need to move forward.

I will let people know the
I will let people know the results of tomorrow's meeting. I am hoping that we wont close the EDA, I might take up a more prominent position depending on whats going and how things roll...
I wont make promises I cant keep, and I wont make deals I may have to reneg on, but I will let people know the results.
regards
Michael Phillips.
At the last meeting only 3
At the last meeting only 3 other people showed up besides the exectutive.
At this point, I'm going to follow others recommendations that the EDA be disolved and all funds be put forth to our candidate, and any funds after that be turned over to the Federal party.
Either there needs to be a new executive leadership, and impo, I think a fresh start would be good or just close the thing down and we all go elsewhere.
Bottom line is either people dont like the party or the EDA leadership.. I dont know what it is...
That's not bad
I don't know how big your executive is, but here in Kitchener we're lucky to get anybody besides our executive. So you might not be doing that bad.
Just a suggestion, but, do meetings always have to be business? You could say, go out to a restaurant afterwards? Always good to have fun and build a strong team.

"People of good faith, figuring out where we are, not falling victim, making choices, based on our values, with the best available information." These views are my own and do not represent the official position of the Green Party of Canada.
Large crowds are rare
We held an election prep meeting yesterday for the Wellington-Halton Hills group and had a small crowd (the usuals) show up with 2 calling in sick who would've been 'bonus' members at the meeting. The biggest crowd at a meeting was at my first one back before the last provincial election and it was still very small (not counting election nights).
The bottom line is most people like supporting from afar, but don't get involved. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked to run (I haven't run yet, but might someday, currently president of local EDA) as finding people willing to do the door knocking and other hard work is a challenge. And this is in a riding that surrounds Guelph which is a hotbed for the GPC.
From talking with people who work with the local Liberals they have the same situation, and the local NDP is pretty much a one man crew while I've heard the Conservatives, who got over 50% last election, have a limited group as well (under 10 who do 95% of the work). Politics is not an easy thing to get volunteers for, regardless of being 1st or 3rd in your riding.

Not a good idea.
If you eliminate your EDA, all of the money will have to go back to the central party and your candidate cannot raise or hold money outside of elections until their candidacy is approved by elections Canada.
You are better off to maintain a nominal EDA with a CEO (could be the candidate) and a FA.
I know a number of EDAs that keep the minimal financial reporting status for the sake of raising funds for their candidates.
More
The better explanation, is that people don't like meetings and while they support the party, they are not that political.
I've been in a few EDAs where attendance at the meeting is small, because they expect it will be boring and their attentions are elsewhere.
Anyways, have you called individuals on the membership list and asked them what they think? (did you call them to invite them to the meeting?)
Let me tell you about the 2006 Campaign
I had a hell of a struggle getting people to meetings after 2004, but prior to 2005-6 campaign. I kept in touch though, and continued to promote the pub night downtown. We ended up with a contest, and the candidate who won had a number of small social wine & cheeses, and cocktail party's. A few people would show up and they were good fun, but we kept on plugging. When the writ was dropped, we had a campaign meeting, and all of a sudden, about 25 people showed up. It was because we kept on plugging. They supported us, and were certain that things were in good hands, and when the crunch came, they came to the plate. By the end of the campaign we had over 40 volunteers.
Try to inject some fun into it, and connect on a personal level.
Thanks, Matt
Thanks for sharing that story, Matt. I'll bet there are a number of others like it out there.
Don't focus too much on meeting for the sake of meeting
I'm not sure what you expect out of monthly EDA meetings, or what you wish to accomplish at them.
In our riding, we have a monthly meeting just of the EDA executive to keep up wiht our official business (we're pretty busy with events and activities) but we do a lot by email in between. Although we now have an "open" exec meeting every other month which any member can attend, we don't expect many (or any) to do so. Instead, we contact them regularly through email newsletters and then directly (email or phone) when there is an event coming up, especially if we need volunteers.
We also have a monthly social meeting - usually a pub night, sometimes a coffee house - on the 17th each month. That's open to members and anyone interested from the public and has no goal or agenda, just a chance to chat and socialize with other greens and green-curious.
In general, if we want the membership to attend a meeting, we give them a reason to be there - refreshments, a special speaker, etc. Other than that, we're happy if they can make it out to volunteer at events or go canvassing or whatever. We don't put too much emphasis on meeting just for the sake of meeting. Those who want to help organize the riding are on the exec - the rest have other interests, and we're happy for whatever they can put forward.
I would agree with Matt Day above that it would be inadvisable to deregister an EDA simply due to a period of low attendance. Just the hassle of closing bank accounts and other such wrap-up, only to have to open new ones and start all over again later, would be a waste. The amount of money you have on hand is enough to promote and host a suitable event to try and get more people involved. In general, an EDA should try to spend some of its money on events or activities to generate growth in the riding instead of hoarding it all for a future election. Treat it like seed money, plant it, harvest what grows.

Team-building
Something else you might try in your riding is a team-building excercise.
Last year Peter our CEO booked us a day of treetop trekking (despite his fear of heights). It was a great chance for the executive to get together and do something both cooperative & competitive as a group without having to talk politics or organizing. This year we're looking at a set of activities based around a paint-free paintball event.
For your general membership, you can do things like a corn roast. We missed our corn roast last fall, so instead we did a cookie exchange. You could sign up a team for a charity walk-a-thon and see how much the Green Team can raise for a good cause. Or do a park clean-up and see which team or family can fill the most bags of trash - then have some pizzas together. (We do this twice a year). Family-friendly (and pet-friendly) events are a great way to access members or supporters with children.

results, we elected a new CEO
results, we elected a new CEO of the EDA and our previous CEO moved down to financial officer and we are going to run with acting directors appointed by the CEO.
We are going to work on a facebook presence, twitter etc, and redoing our site and adding a forum, where we may use live chat to hold some meetings or post questions and stuff..
Anyways we are still here, our new ceo has some great ideas... mind you chilliwack fraser canyon is the one of the biggest ridings in canada...so it will take alot of work..
First EDA Meeting since election
Hi all.
Well, last night we had our first EDA meeting since the election. It was great to get together with everyone and have so many new people out to see what we are up to and support the EDA.
After a pretty disheartening winter of prorogations, climategates, and the mess at Copenhagen it was nice to spend an evening hanging out, making new friends, and catching a vision for what the future might hold for our EDA.
Like Michael said, we live in one of the largest ridings in Canada and that means a lot of work. It also means a lot of opportunities to meet new people and encounter new ideas/approaches. I really can't wait to see the stuff that folks in this riding come up with as we begin facilitating more opportunities to connect and get involved.
Anyway... since this is my first post I should probably introduce myself. I'm Jamie and I just stepped into the CEO role for the Chilliwack/Fraser Canyon EDA. I've been lurking on this site for about 7 months, but figured it was best to just listen and get the lay of the land before jumping in. Thanks to everyone who contributes regularly to this site... lots of food for thought and a great schooling in the ideas and values of the GP.
