What is our position on this? Iran is certainly not limiting its actions to nuclear reactors. If this continues, we will have a fully nuclear armed middle east in no time.

Re: Iran
It is very dangerous to allow
It is very dangerous to allow the situation in Iran to continue. Regardless of the intentions of Iran, Saudi Arabia will presume that Iran's nuclear complex is for military purposes. Iran recently confiscated Ebadi's Nobel peace price and are now simply denying it was confiscated, even though its whereabouts have been unknown since police raided her safety deposit box. Iran's actions are becoming increasingly brazen.
If there has ever been a time when international intervention was morally acceptable, this certainly qualifies. We shouldn't dismiss the seriousness of the situation.
At the very minimum, the GPC should be publicly calling on Iran to abandon nuclear energy on the same basis that it asks Canada to do so.
"Regardless of the intentions of Iran..."
Isn't that the problem, that the US doesn't really care what Iran's intentions are? If the US would stop its imperial saber-rattling we'd all be better off. What is our best source of information on this issue? Is it ISIS?
Iran...
We can go with the IAEA. And the intentions are not relevent. The GPC has an anti-nuclear policy and we should reiterate it to Iran especially on the face of it spurring a nuclear arms race in the middle east.
I don't even see why this is a debate for any Green, anywhere. I guess I should ask if anyone here thinks it's a good idea for Iran to develop uranium enrichment capabilities, and why we need to remain silent about it?
Re: Iran...
That's sort of my point. We
That's sort of my point. We can't live in a world where only nice people have rules and everyone else can do whatever the heck they want. Either everyone has rules or no one has rules. We should decide which world we want.
GPC stance on Iran and nuclear weapons
http://greenparty.ca/media-release/2009-08-21/green-party-statement-iran
Quote from statement (but please read it in full. Anyone can find past statements on any country by typing in the country's name into the search. )
The Green Party statement was co-written by the GPC International policy team on shadow cabinet in consultation with an Iranian member of the GPC and an Iranian expert who has worked with the UN on Iranian human rights issues. Our stance on Iranian development of nuclear arms is the same as our stance on Israeli nuclear weapons and any other country who possesses or wishes to develop nuclear weapons. We condemn them whether they are developed by allies or not. Nuclear weapons development is not new in Iran. The U.S. was assisting the former Shah of Iran in developing nuclear weapons and had been working on it since the mid sixties. The program was halted by the Iranian revolution and the first revolutionary government after 1979.
From the GPC statement released this summer 2009 which forms our official policy stance on Iran.
"The Green Party of Canada condemns the development of, and possession of nuclear weapons by any nation. We believe the dependence on oil and nuclear energy contributes far too much to global military conflict. Global security can only be achieved through peace, democracy and real diplomacy.
The Green Party believes that the Canadian government should begin to develop a truly independent foreign policy toward Iran by;
• Actively re-engaging Iran in a new diplomacy, fully cognizant of the history of the region and internal politics of Iran.
• Separating Canadian dialogue from, and condemning, a false rhetoric that only serves to inflame and aggravate misunderstandings of the Iranian people and their culture.
• Encourage the creation of cooperative programs that offer Iranian civil society members such as lawyers, legislators, judges, civil engineers, environmentalists and other professionals to directly engage with their professional Canadian counterparts here.
• Support the Iranian people in their quest to strengthen, through peaceful means, the democratic process within Iran.
• Condemn all human rights violations and judicial trials in which torture and police brutality is suspected in obtaining false confessions.
• Support the environmental movement in Iran by working with other countries and the Iranian government to develop cooperative projects within Iran to address the increasing environmental degradation threatening the country.
• Call for full Iranian government cooperation with all IAEA inspections and requests concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
• Offer any and all diplomatic assistance that facilitates engagement and dialogue between Iran and its regional neighbours to ease tensions and foster the stability and peace desired by citizens of the entire region."
