Strategic Counsel Poll -- Greens at 10% Nationally
The Toronto Star is reporting today that Conservatives and Liberals are virtually tied in a recent poll (31% Con - 30% Liberal). The Star reports that while the Cons have lost about 10 points in the past several months, the Liberals and NDP made only slight gains. NPD was reported at being 18%.
No mention of the Green Party or the Bloc in the Star article.
I got my hopes up. If Cons are down significantly, and NDP and Libs up only slightly, maybe we're up a little bit more. The Ekos poll last week put our support at about 13% nationally. Maybe this poll too? Why doesn't the Star say something about us!
Oh well. I found this link to another blogsite which purports to have the inside goods. Looks like we're at 10% nationally.
Apparently there are regional breakdowns, but the link above only provides info on Libs/Cons/NDP; identifies that it's a virtual 3-way tie in B.C., with each party between 28-31%.
I'm sure there will be more details about where Greens are at over the course of the next few hours. Generally, though, 10% nationally seems positive, and maybe we are finding ourselves on an upward trend now, for all of the good reasons Dave Bagler identified in his blog.

Best news? Nobody in majority territory at all. Minority governments will continue for the mean time.

Poll Numbers -> Coalition Heresy
Latest Ekos poll numbers: 31.5% CPC 30.9% LPC
14.9% NDP 11.5% Green 9.1% BQ 2.1% Other
With the status-quo parties in a dead heat and neither near majority territory - an agreement/coalition between the NDP and GPC could hold the balance of power = 26.4%
Of course percentage does not translate necessarily into seats. There's a strong contingent of voters who have an aversion to purely 'socialist solutions'. But if a Green-Democrat coalition could swear-off, 'tax and spend' and propose; a green recovery with sustainable jobs, and tax relief for small business and lower/middle incomes.
It may be heresy but its enabling arithmetic .

Merging with others = loss of many members
If an agreement/coalition with the NDP, Liberals, Conservatives, Bloc, Rhinos or whoever occurred in such a way as to remove the ability to vote Green then my vote and support would be going away as well.
Yes, we are in a first-past-the-post system which is desiged for a 2 party system. Yes, it is frustrating that we have no seats. However, merging (which is basically what is suggested) is not a good idea.
Heck, lets merge with Harper's crew - then you have over 40% and a majority. Of course we all saw what happened to the PC's when they did just that - they disappeared into the Reform party and that is who now runs Canada. Merge with the NDP and we'll quickly be just another rump in that party, same with the Liberals.
If I wanted to make change from within a party that could win today then I'd have joined the Conservatives or Liberals instead.
After an election, then talk about working with other parties to make changes should we win seats. Until then focus on winning those seats and making change via any other method available.
Also, take note: The non-CPC/Liberal vote is now bigger than either of those two parties support. Change will come, but merging (or doing 'we won't run against you' agreements) is a dead end which delays change.

I've been conned, and an
I've been conned, and an NDPer... I never felt right in either of them.
The cons would have been calling you during proregation saying there is a chance of an election while no one was sitting... that party is about the money need..
