Who will blink first in the State of Denmark
I am getting somewhat overstimulated here in Hopenhagen. So many climate superstars and so little time to absorb it all. I attended a splendid session on the Tar Sands today although the First Nations moderator was some what too fond of hearing himself. Elizabeth was there and Maude Barlow - both gave excellent accounts of the issue.
Tar Sands are really becoming a hot issue and frequently come up in debates or talks. We learned from a UK anti-Tar-Sands group that BP might be persuaded to back away from a commitment, which would send a real sour message to Stelmach and co. Canada is becoming a pariah state for so many reasons including, as it was called in a tableau I picked up, Fort McMoney.
Then, at my temporary residence here on telly, was a debate from the BBC and Danish TV with Rudd (Australia), Swedish Pres, South African Env Minister and the president of the Maldives, who is really fantastic. The Maldivian doesn't talk the diplomatese but lays it out clearly and ethically and states the situation as it really is. He is the one who hosted a scuba meeting for his cabinet.
Made it just at the end of a session on meat and dairy consumption. This very critical issue is beggining to get the attention it warrants, even Al Gore is in tape saying that it's been neglected too long. There is an outfit called Supreme Master Cheng Hi who have been outside the COP meeting every day with signs and free bags of info in the nasty cold. Check them out on-line they could become a great asset.
Anyway, the crunch comes tomorrow - shit or bust I suppose. Who is going to blink first - the west or the G77? From my perspective the poor countries have nothing to lose and are well led and will hold out. The big question seems to be - will an agreement, any agreement, be good, or should we hope for next year in Mexico?
