Dartmouth - Cole Harbour
Paul Shreenan grew up in Dartmouth where his father worked as a Hydrographer at the Bedford Institute. As a young person Paul paddled competitively at Banook Lake and later coached canoeing at Sack-A-Wa canoe club for several summers.
Paul graduated from Dartmouth High School. After working for a few years he attended Mount Saint Vincent University where completed an Honours degree in Sociology. He then went on to Carleton University in Ottawa to pursue M.A. and later Ph.D. research in Sociology.
Paul instructed environmental sociology and development studies at Saint Mary’s University department of Sociology 1996-2004. In 1998 Paul spent the fall semester teaching at the Saint Mary’s Extension Programme in Gambia, West Africa. In addition to teaching in Africa Paul taught Native Students in Northern Manitoba as part of the University of Manitoba’s Extension Programme (1993). Paul has a nineteen-year-old son named Makenna who lives in Winnipeg.
With Elizabeth May and others Paul became a founding member of the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada. He later took on roles as Treasurer and Chairperson of the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the Sierra Club. He also volunteered extensively with the Ecology Action Center on fisheries issues during the 1990s.
Paul had an environmental talk show for 3 years on community radio. For three years he volunteered as board member and later treasurer at the Center For Art Tapes, a local video production and training institution. Paul currently works for Metro Transit.
Paul’s interests and research background in economic development and social justice reflect the values and priorities he shares with the Green Party’s vision for the future. As a long-time friend and supporter of Elizabeth May, he shares her commitment to reforming Canadian democracy and building a green Canada.
