Janice Harvey was born and raised on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. She received a Bachelor of Education from UNB in 1977 and briefly taught in the public school system.
After the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979, Janice joined the Maritime Energy Coalition, Canada’s first anti-nuclear group. As part of this campaign, she joined Elizabeth May as a Small Party candidate in the 1980 federal election.
From 1983 to 1989 Janice worked as the Executive Director of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick. During that time she also served as VP of Friends of the Earth Canada, and Chair of the Canadian and New Brunswick Environmental Networks. In 1990 Janice established the Conservation Council’s Marine Conservation Program, which she directed until September 2007.
Since 1995 Janice has written a weekly public affairs column for the Telegraph Journal. From 2005 to 2007, she was a panelist on CBC Radio’s Friday political panel, and has provided on-air election night commentary for provincial and federal elections.
In 2007, Janice returned to UNB and in May 2009 received a Master’s of Philosophy in Policy Studies. She is currently lecturing at St. Thomas University and UNB’s Renaissance College, and doing communications for the Fundy North Fishermen’s Association.
In November 2008, Janice became the first president of the New Brunswick Green Party. Recently she was appointed to the Green Party of Canada Shadow Cabinet as Fisheries critic.
Janice lives with her husband David Coon and their daughters, Caroline, 14, and Laura, 11, in Waweig, near St. Andrews, NB. They are members of the United Church of Canada, Oak Bay Pastoral Charge. Janice serves on the Environmental Working Group, Church in Action Committee of the United Church’s Maritime Conference.
