Andrew Carkner

Andrew Carkner first moved to Westmount–Ville-Marie in 2001 to study Chemical Engineering at McGill University. His aim was to use engineering to heal the physical and chemical damage humanity has caused to our environment. After completing a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 2006 and a Master of Engineering degree in 2008, he moved to Vancouver for a year then returned to Montreal. He is currently a junior process engineer at a Montreal-based waste-to-energy company.

Andrew has been a committed environmentalist his whole adult life. However, like many, he avoided the messy and frustrating world of politics. Gradually he realized that the threat of climate change was so severe and so immediate that only collective action could prevent widespread social, ecological, and economic collapse. In 2004, he volunteered in his first election, and since 2006, he has worked as a volunteer Green organizer.

Andrew was first attracted to the Green Party because, as a global party, it is best equipped to solve global problems such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and endemic poverty. After reading the detailed party platform, he realized that the party also offers a practical, even elegant, way to move forward on many difficult issues that Canadians face today. Whereas the other major parties seem to lack vision and provide election platforms which are vague and limited in scope, in contrast, the Green Party of Canada offers a detailed, comprehensive 100-page platform of policies and initiatives. The optimism of the Green vision is also in stark contrast to the fearful and fear-mongering visions of the other major parties. The Green Party has no bogeyman to rile up voters, just sensible solutions to the problems we all face.

Andrew Carkner is the nominated candidate for the Green Party of Canada in the riding of Westmount–Ville-Marie.
