Ajax - Pickering
Mike Harilaid brings to the table a broad range of real life experience and a passion for doing what is right. He combines a practical business approach with a commitment to the environment and helping families. Last election he increased the Green vote in his riding by nearly double.
Mike’s first career focus was real estate and finance. He became licensed as a real estate broker in 1987 and earned a number of professional accreditations, including Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of Canada (FRI) and the highly regarded Certified Property Manager (CPM). After becoming a director of a national real estate organization and writing a number of real estate texts, he decided to turn his attention to other more creative fields. In 1992, he formed the fledgling production entity Black Walk which became a leading producer of music videos both domestically and internationally. In addition, he has produced numerous award winning films and documentaries including many features films. He is a member of the Canadian Film and Television Producers Association.
He is keenly interested in sustainable food supplies and operates an experimental farm in Pickering, which is developing safe food strategies in a realistic manner. He is also a member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture.
Since his recent acquiring of The Tower Hotel in Port Hope, Mike has been working with the local coalitions there, and has helped many residents with issues of poverty and decent housing.
Mike lives in Pickering, north of Greenwood, and has two children, Hannah and Silas. His family has lived in the riding for over 50 years. As a long time resident of the area, he knows the issues we face and has many innovative plans to deal with them. He is running for The Green Party of Canada because he, like so many Canadians, understands that a strong economy can be environmentally friendly, and that to move forward our country needs to get serious about being more environmentally responsible.
Mike Harilaid is the Green Party of Canada's nominated candidate for Ajax-Pickering.
