Durham
Journalist Stephen Leahy is a leading writer on global environmental issues. He has reported on environmental topics in Canada and internationally for 15 years. Currently the North American environmental correspondent for the Inter Press Service news agency (based in Rome), Stephen's articles are read by more than 200 million people in up to 20 languages worldwide. He has also written commissioned articles for leading magazines and newspapers in Canada, the US and Britain.
Stephen has lectured and participated in workshops and international conferences in several countries. Recent activities include training African journalists in Geneva, and moderating a United Nations sponsored International Media Consultation on Water and Climate Change.
Based on his professional expertise and experience Stephen is certain that only a rapid shift to a low-carbon society can meet the challenges Canada and the rest of the world now face. Stephen believes that shift will only happen through the policies advocated by the Green Party.
Stephen began his journalism career writing about farming and agricultural issues for Durham riding publications, for provincial media such as Better Farming and the Western Producer, and for the UK-based Farmer's Weekly. Prior to that Stephen worked for 10 years in corporate marketing.
Green Party of Canada candidate in 2008 for Durham, Stephen, a newcomer to politics, won 11.4% of the vote.
Stephen, a father of two children, has lived in Durham region for over 25 years. He has been an active member of many community groups including the Optimist Club, the Durham Environmental Network and other local environmental organizations, co-founded the Concerned Citizens of Brooklin, and has run a basketball program for teenagers for several years.
Stephen Leahy is the nominated candidate for the Green Party of Canada in the riding of Durham.
