Davenport
Wayne Scott is a green transportation activist, musician, artist, and has lived in the Davenport riding for 20 years.
Beginning in 1981, and for much of the next quarter century, he worked the streets of his hometown of Toronto, as a foot, bike and transit messenger. Over those years Wayne logged literally hundreds of thousands of document and small-load freight delivery kilometers, without adding to the city's smog or greenhouse gas emission problems.
In 1996, Wayne cofounded Toronto Hoof and Cycle Courier Coalition (Hoof & Cycle), Toronto’s internationally recognized, active transport workers' guild where he advocates for an inter-modal transportation system that might better accommodate a more sustainable, healthier lifestyle.
With Hoof & Cycle, Wayne consulted with members of Toronto’s business community -- and all three levels of government -- to identify and address urban transportation issues like smog, greenhouse gas emissions, unsafe workplace infrastructure, motor-vehicle overuse and, most notably, the recognition of food and liquid as a tax-deductible, alternative fuel for human, and human-powered, delivery vehicles. Wayne successfully lobbied Revenue Canada to have the extra food that foot and bike couriers require for fuel recognized as a tax-deductible expense.
In addition, he helped found the Toronto Pedestrian Committee (TPC) and acted as that body's longest serving member ever, including an eighteen-month term as co-chair. He left the TPC in the spring of 2005, to assume the role of City Cycling Ambassador.
Wayne is also long-time supporter of many members Toronto's critically acclaimed creative community, having spent more than four decades producing musical recordings and promotional graphics for others, and has recently released an Ontario Arts Council-funded DVD reading of his own original poetry, accompanied by the reclusive all-star band, the DifficultMusicians.
Wayne lives in Davenport riding with his partner Katherine. Between them, they gratefully share two children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Wayne Scott is the nominated candidate for the Green Party of Canada in the riding of Davenport.
