Lanark - Frontenac - Lennox and Addington
Born in 1961, in the Northern Ontario town of Elliot Lake, John grew up enjoying the outdoors, fondly remembering family fishing trips in the summer and playing team sports throughout the year - hockey, football, and basketball. An avid reader, the local library became his window to the world.
In 1981, he participated in a Canada World Youth Exchange Program, and was immersed in a cross-cultural experience between Canada and Indonesia.
On his return, he volunteered for two years with a non-governmental organization, working on agriculture and nutrition projects in the Caribbean. Over the years, he has been a tree planter and contractor, planting over a million trees across Ontario, as well as a carpenter and renovator, working on energy-efficient housing.
John and his wife, Christine, operate a vegetarian frozen food company, Pulse Foods, that uses locally grown or Ontario grown vegetables, organic where possible. He and Christine have been married for 26 years. They have two adult children and three grandchildren.
Lanark County has been home for the past 28 years and he currently resides on a 100 acre property near Middleville.
John sits on the volunteer Board of Directors of the Middleville Agricultural Society, helping to make the Middleville Fair, presently in its 160th year, a continuing success.
He enjoys gardening, reading, playing Scrabble, and spending time with his grandchildren.
John has run for the Greens on two previous occasions, provincially in 2003, and federally in 2004. He is running as a candidate in this election because he believes, plainly, that the government is broken and needs to be fixed, that it is a winner-take-all, greed-based system, that makes losers of us all in the long run.
John looks forward to presenting to voters what the Green Party has to offer, a better way of governing, with economic, social, and environmental solutions that will put us on a path to sustainability, and improved quality of life.
John Baranyi is the Green Party candidate for Lanark Frontenac Lennox and Addington.
