Mary Slade

Mary Slade believes the Green Party brings to the Canadian political scene issues - economic, social & environmental - of lasting importance. Mary has been active in Leeds--Grenville for over 30 years from Beaver leader to Treasurer of the "Athens Friends of the Public Library." She retired from the school board in 2003, and is now ready to support participatory democracy by running as a federal candidate in Leeds-Grenville.

Mary's father was a Canadian diplomat. She grew up in Ottawa, Washington DC, London, Moscow, Pretoria & Capetown. In 1971 she married, graduated from Carleton University & Ottawa Teachers' College and left Canada to teach in Nigeria with CUSO. After 2 years volunteering in Africa, she returned to Ottawa to work as a statistician with Health & Welfare. In 1974 she moved to Brockville to join the local school board as planner.

Mary has been a MS Society volunteer for over twenty years; was involved in running a Mallorytown Co-operative Nursery School; coached a minor ball team; been a member of the parent advisory committee, chaperone for the band trips and school dances for Athens District High School. As well Mary has been involved in Athens community theatre productions and is currently an executive member of the Athens Garden Club & Horticultural Society & the transportation work group of "Every Kid in our Communities."

In 1979 her first of three children was born. Two years later the family moved to a farm in the Front of Escott to raise "organic" beef. In 1989 her family moved to a larger farm in the Rear of Young & Escott, where she was active in the farms and with the Canadian Hereford Association. Mary now lives in the rural part of Athens Township.

Mary Slade is the Green Party of Canada's nominated candidate for Leeds--Grenville.
