Burnaby - Douglas
Adrianne Merlo has been a nature-lover since childhood. As a young adult she decided that it was her calling to become a teacher and expose children to the importance of environmental responsibility and stewardship. She graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in history. A year later she earned her teaching certificate after completing practicum at Burnaby South High School. She was hired onto the Coquitlam School District and then decided to start a family.
As a member of the BC College of Teachers, Adrianne has used her educational credentials and experience to provide private tutoring for dozens of children and young adults over the past decade, including head-injured students at Douglas College. She has also taught piano lessons and worked as a professional musician. She and her husband own a successful company in Burnaby and represent the many entrepreneurs who comprise a significant portion of BC’s small business economy.
She and her husband have restored two heritage homes in Burnaby Heights. One of those homes backed onto the Chevron Refinery. The daily exposure to soot and toxic stench not only forced her to relocate, but to become even more committed to environmental issues. She pestered the GVRD, attended community meetings, consulted the David Suzuki Foundation, and wrote numerous letters to various officials. It became clear to her that fundamental political change is required for the average person to realize any sort of environmental address.
Adrianne is happily married, has a dog, a fully-trained house rabbit, and is a devoted mother to three children who are growing up to be environmentally responsible citizens. Adrianne is a foster parent to three children in Africa through World Vision, is a voracious reader, and an avid gardener. Adrianne feels honored to run as the candidate for Burnaby Douglas and is doing so out of a genuine sense of urgency; the politics of ecology have never been more relevant.
Adrianne Merlo is the nominated Green Party of Canada candidate in the riding of Burnaby Douglas.
