Egmont
Carl Arnold is pleased to be running as a Green Party candidate in the federal riding of Egmont. Mr. Arnold lives with his wife and two children in rural PEI. He teaches at Summerside Intermediate where he enjoys working with students and coaching basketball. He recently completed a Masters degree in gifted education.
Mr. Arnold believes the Green Party is the only political party that has a
policy that lines up with his views on the most important issues in Canada
today. In the past he as supported the watershed enhancement movement on PEI
and was an active participant in the effort to get the Province of PEI to
reconsider the plan for centralized composting.
It is his belief that the environment cannot be separated from any issue we
discuss in the political arena. He feels that many decisions are
made in this country as if the environment is something to be enjoyed on weekends; yet,
in reality, environmental policy should guide economic policy.
Carl believes the link to the environment is one that is unbreakable; the only
question that remains is what sort of shape the environment will be in if we
keep on our present path. He is very concerned that in PEI, nitrates
are now present in quantities that affect the water supply of many
Islanders. One issue of particular concern is the large sections of
watercourses on PEI that are anoxic. Anoxic watercourses are unable to
support living organisms that require oxygen.
Another burning issue for Mr. Arnold is the growing wealth gap in this
county and around the world. He is confident that the concentration of
wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people is not sustainable from a
sociological perspective
Mr. Arnold believes fossil fuel use must be addressed. He believe that even though our country benefits from off-shore oil and the tar sands in the short term, planet-wide consumption of almost 100 million barrels of oil per day is not sustainable. He suggests that while the BP disaster clearly points to the immediate dangers of fossil fuel use, the danger from emissions is something that may be far more dangerous to life on this planet.
Carl believes Elizabeth May is a bright light on the political stage, a beacon
that illuminates a path directed to sustainable life on this planet for present
and future Canadians.
