Erich Jacoby-Hawkins

Four-time Barrie Green Party candidate Erich Jacoby-Hawkins is growing very familiar with election activity. But to him, it's just an acceleration of what he does between elections. Meeting voters, speaking to civic groups about critical issues, serving as a local resource on Green policy - these are responsibilities that continue year-round.

Already in 2009 Erich has been interviewed for local papers and TV, featured on live TV call-in shows, spoken to service clubs, addressed city council, and presented a delegation to the county school board. He has joined in park cleanups, charity runs, and door canvasses, and continues to serve on many community boards, including Environmental Action Barrie/Living Green, the Barrie Film Festival, and the Alliance to End Homelessness.

Erich sees building the Green Party’s presence in the community as an on-going commitment. Each of his campaigns has seen greater success than the previous one. In 2007 he overtook the provincial NDP for third place and in 2008 earned more than 10% of the vote in his riding.

Erich is a part-time teacher and full-time volunteer. Over the past ten years, he has served on the Mayor's Task Force on Affordable Housing and on the front lines with Out of the Cold. He has also been a long-time member or contributor to Environmental Defence Canada, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and Amnesty International. He has served as the Green Party of Ontario's critic in the Environment and Housing portfolios and is now the Green Party of Canada's Shadow Cabinet member for Ecological Fiscal Reform.

Raised in the small town of Shelburne, Ont., Erich knows that the best communities are sustainable. Now raising his own 4- and 2-year old daughters with wife Teresa, he first became a foster parent (and still is) at age 16.

Erich Jacoby-Hawkins is the Green Party of Canada's nominated candidate for Barrie.
