Susanne Lauten

Susanne Lauten is a retired small business owner who’s been a three-season resident of Haliburton County for the past fifteen years. She’s the founder of the network Cottagers against Uranium Mining and Exploration, which opposes the uranium exploration taking place in Haliburton and the Kawarthas. By organizing cottagers and joining forces with local residents, Susanne helped win unprecedented changes to the Ontario Mining Act: the future protection of landowners who do not own their mineral rights. Now their land can no longer be exploited by mining companies and prospectors.

Susanne loves the great outdoors—cantering through the woods on a spirited horse, kayaking across tranquil lakes, or hiking scenic paths. In fact, she created a woodland trail system on Gull Lake’s Sugar Island that many now enjoy. Susanne is also Gull Lake’s environmental director and its representative to the Coalition of Haliburton Associations.

Susanne has been a long-time community volunteer. She organized a tenants’ association when residents—many of them seniors on fixed incomes—faced a sudden 37% rent increase. And she’s been a Big Sister with the Big Sisters of York Region for more than ten years. As a devoted animal lover, she regularly visits seniors’ homes and hospices with her two dogs.

Susanne has always had an appreciation for small business. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design, she enjoyed a twenty-five-year career in marketing and photography.

Susanne “wrapped-up” her business and then dedicated herself full-time to protecting the environment and the people of her area. She’s been inspired to run for MP because she views the destruction of our environment as the most important issue facing Canadians today, and knows the Green Party’s approach –environment first—is the wisest choice for the long term future of Haliburton –Kawartha Lakes –Brock.

Susanne Lauten is the Green Party of Canada's nominated candidate for Haliburton--Kawartha Lakes--Brock.
