Oshawa

Gail Bates

Gail Bates was born in Quebec. Her parents were in the Canadian Armed Forces, and she spent her early childhood traveling across Canada and – briefly – in France. When she was nine her family moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In 1972 she married her husband Bernie and they moved to Ontario in 1974; they have three sons. The family has lived in Oshawa since 1981.

Gail has been a registered nurse for thirty-seven years. She worked for Lakeridge Health for twenty-two years, and after that at the Whitby General Hospital before the amalgamation and at the Bowmanville site since then. She is an instructor for the Workers Health and Safety Centre, the co-chair for the Joint Health and Safety Committee at the Hospital, and the union representative for her nursing unit.

The Green Party is the only political group that shares Gail’s belief that we should take care of the planet and leave it better than when we arrived. She wants to see increased research and development of alternative fuels and better recycling programs. Gail’s most important goal for Oshawa is to attract sustainable industry to provide good jobs for the thousands of skilled workers left high and dry by the catastrophic failure of the North American auto business. Green collar industries will employ former autoworkers, their daughters and sons, and generations to come. Sustainability is an economic, environmental, and social value, and the best way forward for Canada as a whole, and Oshawa in particular.

Gail is a past member of the Oshawa Motor City Kinettes and the Ladies of the Moose Lodge. She coached children’s soccer in Oshawa, and was involved with Oshawa Minor Hockey for many years. She enjoys reading, golf, swimming and – of course – politics.

Gail Bates is the Green Party of Canada's nominated candidate for Oshawa.
