Toronto - Danforth

Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu

Until 2005, Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu was a full-time mother to five children with a strong commitment to human rights and a growing concern about the lack of appropriate policy to address the looming crises of climate change and energy scarcity. Then she realized that taking care of her children would require above all making sure they had a liveable world. That’s when she knew it was time to get active, and run for the Green Party of Canada.

Adriana initiated and co-authored A Realistic Energy Plan for Toronto, organized talks by expert speakers, played a central organizing role in Power to Choose in 2007, the Canadians for Kyoto rally in 2007, and the Sunshine Walk for climate justice in 2008. She has given talks to diverse audiences on carbon pricing, global warming and human rights. She hopes to work in Parliament towards greater inter-party cooperation, towards climate change reversal, and towards greater human rights and social justice for Canadians.

Before becoming a mother, Adriana studied Anthropology at the University of Toronto, including a year of study with native Kaingang and Guarani in Brazil. Born in Brazil to a Ukrainian refugee mother and a Brazilian/Italian father, Adriana speaks fluent Ukrainian, Portuguese and English. Her children attend local French language public schools and speak Portuguese at home.

Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu chairs the Cabbagetown-Riverdale Amnesty International group and is a founding member of the Toronto Energy Coalition, which fought the Portlands Energy Centre.  She is an executive member of Post Carbon Toronto, and active with a number of other local Toronto groups such as JustEarth, the Toronto Climate Campaign, and The Next Generation.

She has lived in Riverdale since 2002 with her husband Charlie, four children at home, and a small fluffy dog named Nicky.

Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu is the Climate Critic on the Green Party of Canada's Shadow Cabinet and the nominated candidate for Toronto-Danforth.
