Statement from Elizabeth May on the death of Mi’kmaq leader Noel Knockwood

SIDNEY, BC – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich–Gulf Islands, has issued the following statement on the death of Mi'kmaq leader Noel Knockwood:

“Noel Knockwood was a community leader, a tireless advocate for Mi’kmaq traditions and culture, and a strong voice for the rights of First Nations peoples in Nova Scotia and across Canada.

A Mi’kmaq spiritual leader, Knockwood worked to establish post-secondary education transition programs for Aboriginal students at Dalhousie University. He served on the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, and as the first Aboriginal Sergeant at Arms in the Nova Scotia Legislature.

Noel Knockwood was a man of faith, courage and profound wisdom. His lifelong commitment to human rights was an inspiration to so many.

On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy for his family and loved ones at this time. It was an honour to have known him and worked with him. He will be missed."
