My Message to Canadians on Sept. 7, '08

I gave an address this morning on national television, and I want to recapture some of it here. Somewhat hard to do as I spoke without notes and hope I can share some of it. (I hear it is up on YouTube, if you wanted to see it).

Today was not about me or the Green Party of Canada, nor any other politician or party. This election does not depend on the faces in Stephen Harper’s TV commercials or Stephane Dion’s struggle to master the English language. The fate of our country does not hang on Jack Layton’s ability to convince Canadians that he is a Prime Minister in waiting. Or even on my inclusion in the televised leaders’ debates. Canadians go into this campaign disillusioned with politicians and turned off politics. But there is a power in this country that does not rest in the hands of media pundits and political budgets. There is a power that relies solely on the will of the people. I said this morning that it is time for Canadians to shake off their apathy and their cynicism. It is also a time when politics in this country as has been practiced recently must change. At this point in history, we must put aside partisan differences, forget about the political gains of the next election and put forward a vision for a stronger, healthier Canada. It is the time for Canadians to scrutinize their public officials, to demand better of their Parliament. From disrespect in Question Period on the floor of the House of Commons to a rhetoric that insults the intelligence of the electorate, Canadians have a right to demand better. We cannot afford to ignore the pressing reality of the climate crisis, the need for revitalizing our economy, the ongoing conflicts around the world, specifically Afghanistan. We must tackle these issues with courage and compassion, listening and working together toward solutions to deliver the best for all Canadians. The risks of electing our government through a process of ad campaigns and character debate are too high.
Let us not be afraid to talk about values when we talk about politics. We must not address the issues that are nearest to our hearts without understanding that we must all work toward the same goals. If we share with each other the values of respect, honesty and cooperation, we can begin to make politics an engaging and effective practice. To these values, we must add optimism for a sustainable economy, dedication to living on this planet as though we planned to stay. I must say openly that the Green Party is not my central focus going into this campaign, but Canada is. From foreign policy to climate crisis to unemployment, I believe Canada has edged ever closer to the wrong path, and this is the election, this is the moment when Canadians must stand up for their values and their hopes.
On October 14, 2008, I believe Canadian voters will show that we are capable of great things. I believe that, moving ahead, Canada will show that we are moving in the right direction. I trust in the wisdom of the citizens of this country to share their vision and their humanity so that we can ensure the health and security of generations of Canadians to come.

Layton has agreed to show up if the Green Party is there, as long as Mr. Harper comes too. 2 down (Bloc & NDP), one to go.
