Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

(OTTAWA) – November 20 is recognized as Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Green Party of Canada supports legislation to ensure that transgender Canadians are given the same equality and protection from discrimination and violence that all Canadians value.

As with victims of bullying, transgendered Canadians often feel that they have no place to turn to for help. However, these individuals can be even more vulnerable to violence.  Recent statistics illustrate that 74% of transgendered youth experience verbal harassment and 37% have experienced physical harassment. Furthermore, transgendered individuals are more likely to be unemployed. Many have also attempted suicide.

Several attempts in Parliament have been made to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to protect transgendered individuals under the Criminal Code.  However, opponents of transgendered Canadians have continuously blocked these efforts.

With candlelight vigils taking place in communities across Canada, the Green Party of Canada asks Canadians to respect and protect the rights of transgendered Canadians.
