Green Party wishes Canada’s Jewish Community a Happy Hanukkah

(OTTAWA) - Hanukkah begins this evening and the Green Party of Canada wishes Canada’s Jewish Community best wishes for the holiday season.

Hanukkah is a festival of lights which is observed for eight days and nights in the winter, beginning on the 25th day of Kislev in the Hebrew Calendar. It honours the Judean Revolution against the Seleucid Empire in Jerusalem.

“Hanukkah is a sacred time for Canada’s Jewish community which commemorates the Miracle of Lights that occurred in Jerusalem,” said Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North. “I wish everyone in the Jewish community a happy and safe holiday with family and friends.”

Hanukkah is traditionally observed with the lighting of candles on the nine-branched menorah each night. This tradition commemorates the miracle that occurred during the rededication of the Holy Temple in the 2nd Century BCE. When the Judean Maccabees recaptured the Holy Temple from the Seleucids, they discovered that there was only enough oil to light the temple for one day, but it was said to have remained lit for eight days.
