Statement by the Green Party on the Tragedy in Sydney, Australia

(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada expresses its deepest condolences to those affected by the tragedy in Sydney, Australia.

The incident began Sunday evening when 17 people were taken hostage in a café in Sydney. Two of the hostages, Katrina Dawson – a Sydney barrister, and Tori Johnston – the manager of the cafeteria where the incident occurred, tragically lost their lives.

“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Australia. The tragic loss of two innocent hostages, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, deeply affected Canadians who had been waiting, hoping and praying no lives would be lost,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Tori and Katrina."
