Campus Clubs

What's a Young Green?

Young, Green, and itching to get political? Joining (or starting!) a Green campus club is a great way to try your hand at political organizing and campaigning while meeting cool, like-minded people. What your campus club does is limited only by your wild and untamed political imagination. If you were, say, a member of the Queen’s or Carleton Greens last year, you would have been tearing through campus leaving keen-on-Green students in your wake. Read on, my friends, read on…….

Queens Greens

If you're looking to slyly win over your apolitical friend, take them to a Queens' Greens event. Their winsome affairs have included a Frolf game (Frisbee-golf game) to introduce their club to the campus, a Green Beer night, a Movie Screening of ‘Mosquito Coast’, a partnered event with campus group ‘Green Your Eats’ and a shared fundraiser with campus group ‘Queen’s University Against Killer Coke. They organized a successful and competitive Federal Election 2006 campaign that contributed to a 6% showing for Eric Walton in the Kingston and the Islands Riding. Among the political groups on campus, they definitely set the tone of the campaign, with newspaper ads, posters, debate, information display boards, and recruitment. Wooh! Busy, busy.

Carleton Greens

Carleton U. Greens love you for your heart and your mind, but tickling ‘grey-matter is what they do best. Last year they hosted a talk entitled Appropriate Technology Here and There that discussed appropriate technology in the developing world to improve peoples lives, and appropriate technology here in Canada for environmental sustainability. They also ran a "We support Gay Marriage, Do You?" postcard campaign, handing out and mailing at least 600 postcards to students and MPs. Other activities have included helping WUSC with their Make Poverty History campaign, tabling, canvassing, and running a "meet the candidate" session.
