Jaffer facing drunk driving, cocaine charges
http://www.allistonherald.com/allistonherald/artic...
BY MATTHEW TALBOT, STAFF September 16, 2009 16:09
Rahim Jaffer, husband of Simcoe-Grey MP Helena Guergis, has been charged with drunk driving and possession of cocaine.
Police stopped Jaffer, a 37-year-old Angus resident, on Sept. 11 on Regional Road 50 in Palgrave, about 15 kilometres north of Bolton. Caledon OPP say he was speeding north through the village in a grey Ford Escape at about 12:45 a.m.
Jaffer will be in Orangeville criminal court on Oct. 19 to answer the charges.
His license was suspended for 90 days.
Jaffer was elected MP for the Edmonton-Strathcona riding in 1997, a seat he held up until last year's federal election, when he lost to the NDP candidate.
Linda Duncan, Jaffer’s successor, was the only non-Conservative to win a seat in Alberta.
Jaffer was the first Muslim elected to Parliament when he was elected in 1997.
In 2001 he faced criticism after an aide impersonated him during a radio interview that he wasn’t able to attend. He was removed from his caucus position as a result, but was re-elected to Parliament in subsequent elections.
Jaffer and Guergis have been married for nearly a year. They wed the day after last year’s federal election.
Since losing his seat on Parliament Hill, Jaffer has been working with Green Power Generation Corporation, which focuses on business development for renewable and alternative energy technologies, according to Jaffer's website.
He has been spending time with Guergis in her hometown Angus this summer.

Sadly no one should have their life ruined for a drug problem
Drunk driving is another matter...however
NOW I WONDER WILL HE GET A MANDATORY JAIL SENTENCE ??????? HUH
Watch him walk from the charges
because they can not prove the coke was his and now 5 days later ...undetectable !!!....LOL
Nothing would surprise me any more...with what I have seen.
They will say he picked up a green party hitch hiker or some other such garbage !

Drug testing for MP's
I have often wondered what the results would show if all the MP's and Crown Corporation people were subjected to madatory drug testing. All he people who are against legalizing pot in public but are hypocrits in private. It would be interesting. (For the record I've never done any illegal drugs of any kind and nor do I promote pot use).
I do
Would that not be the day ! Yes
But.....
"""(For the record I've never done any illegal drugs of any kind and nor do I promote pot use)""
I have
and I should say I was also in a police line up
when they used to still jail gamblers ...
now they cheer them on or ignore them ....
yes old ladies in casino's addicted like they are crack grannies blowing the life savings....
and most think it actually goes to sports funding ...what a hoot ...some are.....
in that case ....shhhhhhh quiet we do not want to scare and wake the elves and fairies...
Now excuse me but I also promote its use ...having just investigated claims of medical miracles and life ending cancers cured from it ...sorry call me silly what with friends dying needlessly
Yes yes yes I know what you are thinking....its always about the kids isn't it?
Maybe just place your head back in that sand and maybe we can pretend no one but street junkys provides crime with all that cash.
No
I am a realist and fiscally conservative....
you wont find me in a "bacon busters" team even though bacon kills more than cannabis which so far has killed no one.
I am sorry I could go on and on and its only your little quote there that stuck in my craw and caused this so relax...I am just spouting.
But seriously though...what about ...off the record?
You or anyone you know ever used cannabis?
Should they be in jail? and pay for the rest of their lives?
Should they never have a party that stands up to their abuse?
I know the number one cause of teenage boys deaths.... is suicide.
I know the number is far far lower in cannabis using teenage boys.
Ritalin is almost chrystal meth and no real help except to cramming university students yet it is the most prescibed drug to canadian children.
I have said it all before so I wont bother.
I agree with your thoughts about random drug tests for some... having watched senior politicals outside smoking cannabis only to then just say
" Jail them all " and then go suck more beers back at conventions.
Its certainly not just the street junkys keeping all that crime selling drugs....
not by a long shot !!
Lots of "non promoters" using em TOOOOOOOOOO!
Cheers and thanks for responding
Not necessarily conspirational
I would not jump to assume an untoward conspiracy to delay reporting of this. I attribute it to one or both of a couple of factors:
- Police may hold off reporting charges that could have serious repercussions for a very public figure if there is any doubt about any aspect of the charges or the situation they arise from - the higher-ups may wish to confirm what the beat-cops witnessed or other aspects of the arrest or evidence before they commit the department to making a statement. If they announce right away and it turns out they were mistaken or misspoke in any way, it could cause unnecessary problems both for the arrestee and for the department. So caution is prudent. Maybe they were waiting on test results to confirm that what they found was cocaine, or verify a blood-alcohol test. (Diabetics may exhibit roadside signs of alcohol intoxication despite not being drunk, and a white powder may or may not be cocaine - it will taste like whatever it's cut with. Best to rule those out first.)
- Local police in Palgrave (a small village in a rural county) may not have realized who they had arrested. Unless he said "Hey, I'm a former MP from Calgary" then it's quite possible that they weren't even aware of that. (Being the husband of a local MP won't give you much leverage with the provincial police, so he probably didn't flash that, either.) All they know is they grabbed some guy from out West who's staying in Angus. Lots of folks can't even name their own current MP, much less identify former ones from other provinces. I would guess that Jaffer would have avoided broadcasting his "famous" (to us politicos) identity so as to avoid or delay media coverage. Nothing in the arrest process requires you to point out to police that bagging you could be big news. Out-of-towners are usually not reported by name in the police blotter reports of impaired driving arrests unless and until someone decides the person is prominent enough to make it newsworthy or important for the public to know about.
What I find a bit more suspect is his wife (MP Helena Geurgis)'s refusal to give comment while she "waits for further information". In the week since this happened, has she not had a chance to ask her husband about this? Does she not trust the facts he reports to her? What more "information" is she waiting for to be able to either defend him as innocent, or facilitate his guilty apology?

Not likely Fuzzy
"Maybe they were waiting on test results to confirm that what they found was cocaine, or verify a blood-alcohol test."
Your doubts above are completely without knowledge in my view.
Above...?
You mean ?....instead of the road side "pour it in the jar and shake it test"...LOL
Or were you referring to the "see what the boss says first test"?
Don't kid yourself they knew who he was and is...and they knew what he had ...do not even try your side track.
No I stand by my views from experience in the drug war and say for example that if he was still a Conservative MP .......5 x 5000 days could pass with still absolutely no charges.
Ever hear of Ho?
Started an air line out here ...a bunch of conservatives left the liberals here and worked for him.
An ex MLA ...his president.
He obviously PO'ed some one and when news finally broke of the assorted hookers and crack cocaine in his car ....he was already folding his company and headed back to china never to be charged as many lost jobs quietly.
Lots of celebrities just have their drugs taken .....lots of hockey players....lots of pretty girls
non whites ?...get zero breaks most times.
I find your excusing a rabid prohibitionist with obvious karma problems ... puzzling.
What I find also puzzling is how quickly it died and why his wife did not know unless it was actually hers?
Why has no one asked if he was alone in the car?????????
In which case I see the 5 day delay as a way to get all the ducks in a row more likely.
These are my opinions but for example had Schrieber been in that situation instead of germany ...you and I would know before he hit the station !!
Its ok to be naive....experiance corrects that and yes that takes time.
Thanks for responding.....and Oh Fuzzy do you also say he probably had cannabis in his blood based on your earlier assessments of drug issues and drunk drivers???? ...LOL
Cheers
(although I am on the Medicine Cabinet(Eco-logical Reality Reform), views I express here are my own and should not be construed to represent the official position of the Green Party of Canada ..LOL)
Lay off the rudeness
I never excused a prohibitionist - what on Earth are you talking about? I've been anti-prohibition for over a decade, twice as long as I've been a Green. I've told you this before.
I'm simply stating that your conspiracy theory about delay is neither proven nor does it help the discussion. Believe it if you like, but don't attack a fellow anti-prohibitionist for not agreeing with this particular conspiracy accusation. I guess I'm not as paranoid as you. (Feel free to tack some LOL or hahaha on there for good measure).

Why I am Green
Because the green party is opposed to continuing the prohibiting of Cannabis.
If that changes I will be gone and I will take my vote with me. I am an anti prohibition activist. I belong to www.norml.org and www.leap.cc
Make no mistake a lot of Greens smoke the green and if you fuck us over we will be gone. There are 5 million tokers in Canada that is a lot of votes. Please make the smart move and welcome all of us to the Green Party of Canada.
I do what I can to spread the word about the Greens Legalization message and remind voters that it is the only party which has Cannabis Legalization as a party platform.
People who support Prohibition are either ignorant or a fascist. We can help with the ignorance part.
Welcome Brian !
I hope people like Fuzzy eventually know about a lot of us.
I know you also come from the nDP as I have seen your name at activism sites.
I have been waiting for many people just like you.
Thanks for joining and thanks for piping up !!
There are lots of us here already although most still used to fearfully staying quiet... but good loyal types who have followed my efforts through the nDP and laytons lies.
I always remember when in the beginning some even thinking their vote would put the police on to them.
We need many more just like you and I yes thank you!
We must all now go educate and get them all to join and more importantly get them all to vote!
I look forward to your help here with the few here still wanting us jailed bullied stigmatized and abused...or just labeled an anti semitic to do it all ..etc...although many have learned that we are not really bad people and the rest could be gone at the next leadership review....LOL(yes a joke)
I see I just had to mention him I guess...........
My oh my........
http://www.timescolonist.com/cars/Vancouver+billionaire+David+charged+with+confining+woman/2043646/story.html
""VANCOUVER — Billionaire Vancouver businessman David Ho, the founder and owner of now defunct Harmony Airlines, has been arrested and charged with several offences, including the unlawful confinement of a woman.
Ho, a 57-year-old former member of the Vancouver Police Board, has also been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
The charges stem from a police investigation that began late last year, Cst. Lindsey Houghton said today.
Ho, whose full name is Ting Kwok David Ho, made contact with the alleged victim on a chat line on December 28, 2008.
Ho arranged to meet the woman, picked her up and drove her back to his house......see link
So I guess it just took a mention...although his story has sure been cleaned up what with all that cocaine etc being all over the news first and now you can not find the stories.
Yes ....good luck finding most of the old links...such is the power of money I guess.
Cheers
As usual and like in the greens some are more equal than others
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/crime/article/777147--drug-drunk-driving-charges-dropped-against-former-tory-mp?bn=1
Here is part of it ...............
""""Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer pleaded guilty today to careless driving after charges of speeding, drunken driving and possession of cocaine were withdrawn in an Orangeville court.
Jaffer, 38, will pay his $500 fine within the next month. He has already given $500 to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
“I’m sure you can recognize a break when you see one,” Justice Doug Maund told Jaffer in court after the Crown announced it was dropping the other charges.
Outside the courthouse, Jaffer admitted, “I should have been more careful. I’m sorry. I know this is a serious matter.”
Wearing a dark suit, with his hair gelled, a confident Jaffer was flanked by family and his lawyer, Howard Ruble, as he spoke briefly before being whisked away in an SUV."""
MP or money?
I'm not sure if you are suggesting that it was political favour. I'm sort of on the fence myself, but in any event, anyone with enough money can buy their way out of these types of problems.
A DUI can prevent you from entering the other countries (being an indictable offense), whereas careless driving is a summary offense... A truly disgusting display of "justice".
Come on!
You are on the fence?
Bizarre
This is so blatant it is digusting
I bet his wife was in the car as well
No this could be really exploited if the greens get it together
But like with this situation ....Some are much more equal than others
What garbage and hypocrisy happened in this case!
