Site 41 Landfill is Illegal--Not the Community
SIMCOE COUNTY--Lawyers for Simcoe County are making an application today for a court injunction to end the blockade at the proposed Site 41 landfill in Tiny Township, despite no proper approval of Site 41 by the municipal council. In the absence of a by-law authorizing the project, Site 41 is illegal, not the community protesting the dump-site.
“We stand in solidarity with the local citizen protest and call on both the County of Simcoe and Premier McGuinty to do the right thing,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May. “Council should be calling for an emergency review of Site 41, not an emergency injunction to criminalize the community for protecting their water. The community is peacefully objecting to unauthorized government conduct and the Ontario government should also be reviewing their support of the landfill.”
The Green Party of Canada supports the call by community activists and the Council of Canadians for a moratorium on development as well as an independent environmental review before any more construction takes place at Site 41 in Simcoe County. A special session of the local council regarding the one year moratorium has been scheduled for late August, in the meantime, construction should be halted.
