NHL star player Georges Laraque joins the Green Party of Canada

MONTREAL – NHL star player Georges Laraque, who is very involved in a number of causes including the relief effort in Haiti and animal welfare, has officially joined the ranks of the Green Party of Canada. Says Mr. Laraque, “I want to be part of a group that is working to build a society that is more just, more healthy, and more in harmony with the environment.” The announcement was made during a screening of Earthlings, an event sponsored by Mr. Laraque.

“The Green Party has been active in Parliament in Europe and Australia for many years, and it has been to their benefit. It is high time for Canada to build a strong Green Party and to elect MPs who will speak out for a modern, sustainable and just vision of our development and choices,” said Jacques Rivard, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada, upon presenting Georges Laraque with a jersey with his new team colours.

“As the Olympics open here in British Columbia all Canadians eyes turn to the dedication and commitment to athletic excellence of Canada’s athletes,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Canadian Greens. “We are so proud that Mr. Laraque has made the link between the need for a healthy planet in order to pursue those sports that Canadian’s love.”

Mr. Laraque's announcement is part of a Green Party of Canada campaign in Quebec that will take place this spring. Of special note is that this series of events will include lectures by elected European Greens. The Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada, Jacques Rivard, is also preparing a tour of Quebec in order to show the Party's support for various issues affecting Quebec and the importance of having a strong, politically active Green Party. Mr. Rivard also points out that Europe, which has long elected Green politicians, has benefited from major environmental and social improvements thanks to their efforts.

Mr. Laraque provided the French-language narration for Earthlings, a documentary about our relationship with and treatment of animals.
