Encouraging the commercial seal hunt is keeping Canadian workers in a dying industry

OTTAWA -- Senators and Members of Parliament are once again using public funds to promote the seal hunt and prevent any possible transition from seal hunting to a sustainable industry as expected and desired by the majority of our trading partners.

Adding to numerous international protests, recent polls show that a majority of Canadians are in favour of implementing a transition plan for our Atlantic workers.  “This government knows it is not just a seal hunt issue, but it is also about preventing a precedent and a debate about violence towards animals in Canada or anywhere in the world,” said Sameer Muldeen, Animal Issues critic.

The government is constantly using desperate measures such as blaming seal populations for fish depletions and organizing seal dinners with officials when research clearly demonstrates that over-fishing and dragging is the principal cause for worldwide sea life depletion. The Green Party asks the Harper government to use taxpayer money to create green and sustainable jobs for our Atlantic workers instead.

“There are stockpiles of buried PCBs surrounding the Magdalen Islands. A decontamination project addressing this urgent issue would create hundreds of jobs for workers,” said Muldeen. “Many other viable suggestions have been made in the past for the Maritimes such as eco-tourism and green energy projects such as water turbines. It is time to get on with it.”
