Membership Drive Recap

The Yukon is the furthest riding from Ottawa and national Green Party headquarters. It's also the 4rth largest in size and the second lowest in population. But you might not know that given the results of the recent membership drive.

Yukon TerritoryWe came second! I would like to congratulate Huguette and her Okanagan-Shuswap riding, who won the membership drive. Huguette is a truly inspirational candidate. Plus she has my sister helping out her team so I'm not surprised!

Just before we heard about the membership drive, our local riding association had made a decision to generate some new members this past summer. So the timing was great. Right away, everyone here was asking if it would be a per capita competition. With 21,500 voters we're at a slight disadvantage.

I said to our team, let's not worry about the per capita issue, let's try and win it outright. And we put on a great run, raising 50+ new members, bringing our total membership to over 150. I was really proud of our achievement.

The reality is that we win not because of a competition, but because members are the lifeblood of the Green Party. They provide the diverse, democratic voice that shapes the ridings and the party as a whole. Members are the supporters, volunteers, voters and advocates for the Green Party.

Here in the Yukon, we are trying to create a political movement which reflects our core values. In order to rebuild our political landscape and in order to sustain it, we need a solid foundation. For the Green Party, that foundation is our principles, our policy and our people.

So with that I wanted to say thank you to all of our members, and to welcome those that have recently joined us. The Green Party, it makes you think.

Next time you are North of 60, please say hello!
