$100 BC Climate Action Dividend Donated to Green Party
I haven't blogged for ages...so busy knocking on doors and street canvassing, meeting as many voters as possible before the next federal election. It’s the most important thing I can do to move from currently polling in close second place to winning on election day. (If you want to help, please sign up as a volunteer at http://votecarr.ca).
But I just couldn't miss the opportunity to publicly thank a wonderful woman from Gabriola Island who signed over her $100 BC Climate Action Dividend to our party. Thank you, Christine!
Sending your $100 Climate Action Dividend to the Green Party is such a great idea…and not just because giving it to the Green Party gives you a $75 tax rebate on next year’s tax return! It also keeps momentum going on the climate issue.
The Green Party has always been in the lead on the climate issue. (Check out our newly revised Greens’ Climate Plan Offers Solutions & Hope newspaper at http://votecarr.ca)
We are not going to give up on good ideas or back down on the best possible plans because it’s a little tougher now that gas prices are so high, which may be why some BC New Democrats, appalled by their party’s “axe the tax” campaign are joining the Greens.
Don't we all wish that our federal and provincial governments had taken action on the climate issue back in the 1990s when Canada first signed the Kyoto Accord and gas prices were low. But they didn’t.
With global demand for oil soaring and traditional global supplies dwindling, the price of oil isn’t likely to fall. And, frankly, the world can’t wait any longer.
Whatever the gas prices, a revenue neutral carbon tax is the way to go. It should be coupled, of course, with a “cap and trade” program to bring down big industry emissions and a comprehensive set of energy conservation incentives and regulations.
The reason why we need a carbon tax is not just because it creates higher prices which will force consumers to use less fossil fuels—which is what everyone is arguing about. As we all know, gas prices are already high. People are starting to cycle, walk and use transit more and SUV sales are down. But if we just let oil companies raise prices, they simply pocket record profits. A carbon tax puts revenue into government where it can be used to lower income taxes.
Almost no-one is talking about the most important reason why we need a carbon tax. It’s because a carbon tax puts a price on polluting our atmosphere. It does it equitably across our whole economy, in the least bureaucratic and most efficient way. It is the key to making renewable energy more competitive.
By never having to pay the cost of dumping emissions into the air, fossil fuels have always been under-priced. Inevitably, a carbon tax done right will make the price of renewable energy lower than the price of fossil fuels. And then we’ll get the green energy revolution we need.

$100 donations coming in for SGI
Saanich Gulf Islands EDA is also receiving $100 climate action dividends from members and friends in BC,... Thanks! If every SGI contact donated $100 we would exceed are campaign spending limit,.... that would be an interesting problem to have!
Here is my blog post from our SGI campaign site, www.andrewlewis.ca ...
Been wondering what to do with your $100 Climate Change Action Rebate the BC Government is handing out to all BC residents?
Here's a bright idea,... !!
Help "Change the Climate in Ottawa" by helping us build a winning Green campaign through the summer. We have a lot planned but need your support now. Your donation now will help us organise more events and reach out to more voters in the critical pre-election months before a possible fall election.
Also, your $100 rebate goes further since a $100 donation yields a $75 tax credit.
Donations by cheque are payable to Saanich-Gulf Islands Green Party, 9903-7th St, Sidney, BC. V8L 2V8
50 - 50 ok?
Greetings,
Welcome back Adriane....as a deputy leader your input here is certainly always appreciated and welcomed.
You should write more.
I often wonder why more Greens don't use this wonderful tool?
I give this sites address to everyone so I can reach more of them with full Green information and more until I get to their doors.
I will and would like to give you Adriane half of my rebate money as I just gave the other half to Jane Sterk and the BC Greens (fabulous drug policy released May 29th)
I have my own EDA and candidacy to build obviously but after Jane Sterk’s brave and very sane drug policy release I must help provincially as well in what ever way I can and Yes I will.
I also encourage all to consider our provincial party as it is they who will ultimately have to battle the ndp's Carol James and her comments over this issue...really.
No disrespect meant at all to you Adriane!
I want to give the other half to you .....because you have a very good chance to make us some history!
And I have the fortitude to hold you to some of our conversations when you do !
Cheers
Ps
I am always troubled that we the Green Party are not openly calling for an inquiry or something else that address's the real costs for fuel production and a look at the systems we have in place to look out for Canadian equity or our share of natural resources.
As an ex real-estate broker and a bank manager ...well something really stinks here....to me ...to put it bluntly.
I understand Americans driving cheaper than us on our own gas especially when you take into account tax payer subsidies but some of what goes on in full sight just makes me just more and more curious.
What is the formula one gets as a corporation to developed Canada's resources?
How is it determined?
It is happening big time in mining and uranium and no one asked me if I should allow all this.haha
The point being what has happened so far should be a very big vote getting issue.
I for one think we the Green Party should be calling for an examination of our current resource development policies in Canada.
Never mind giving BC's rivers away for Hydro production to make billions for aluminum companies that we will in the end even be subsidizing and probably cleaning up from.
Last week China had its biggest increase EVER in the price of oil.....17% over night ...there were protests on the street….long fuel line ups ...many looming consumer fears.
People don't understand that millions of people over there in China are actually in mass losing their life long health care plans as China yes allows whole industries to be privatized by these so called poor Canadian and American business owners needing to move their enterprises over there...haha
So get this.....maybe if we yes re-examine what and how we allow resources to be just forever stripped away by business from our collective country as some even try to then convince all of us they are in fact just doing us a favor .....Yes ...while we see previous disastrous poisoned sites at other industries now years later just abandoned.
And I know China doesn't have a tar sands but maybe if we the Green Party talks like this and can derail the obvious communism rhetoric some will throw at us...
yes we then can have a little more room in taxation and environmental cleanup costs set aside easily ...I would suppose......
as get this with the 17% increase........
Chinese drivers will now pay ...get this.......9 cents a liter!!!!!
Happy Canada Day
Sure must have been a lot of Canadians in the past who have always just sold us out collectively!!
It’s just too bad we don’t have any more “Canadian oil” in this country. LOL
So then yes our policies could be better implemented instead of trying via Washington to put them in place.
We are being robbed in plain sight.
(disclaimer:do not be confused and think shavluk is the green party talking...hahha)
