"Strategic Voting" is Liberal and NDP scaremongering
The old line parties have seen the rise of the Green Party - and have seen how we cut across the old political boundaries to attract people from all parties. In fact, our membership is made up of roughly equal parts former Progressive Conservatives, Liberals, and NDP. No wonder the old line parties are running scared, and unfortunately they are trying to scare us into voting for them.
To be strategic means to think long term, not simply one election at a time. Look at the impact the Green Party has had getting only 4.5% of the vote last election: the Liberals brought in their Green Shift, a watered down version of our plan, the NDP is greenwashing themselves at every turn, and Canadians in general are realizing the importance of the environment. (And no environment means no economy.)
The reality is this: Those who had the courage and wisdom to vote Green last election had far more impact than those who voted 'strategically.'
The Green Party is the worst nightmare come true for these old power addicts. They realise full well that if we become accepted, our appeal will be very broad indeed. The calls for so-called "strategic voting" are Liberal scaremongering, nothing more. Some, like Guy Dauncey, should know better, or perhaps he is a closet Liberal.
The same thing will happen this time. Guy Dauncey and other environmentalists are politically naive at best, partisan at worst. They are foolish to think that voting for what you don't want will get you anything except what you don't want. They foolishly do not see the impact the Greens have had - and will have if we get 15% of the vote and capture several seats.
The sad reality is that these environmentalists have betrayed the environmental movement they claim to support. Had they been encouraging people to vote Green, the environment would have been a much higher priority, a green economy would have come much sooner, and the likelihood of averting climate disaster better.
