Wow! The Green Party had its best election ever!

The most important thing to say is: thank you, thank you, thank you to the amazing Green Party candidates, provincial organizers, campaign managers and workers, volunteers, supporters, donors and of course the almost one million Canadians who voted Green!

I am sure that you’ll agree with me –- with the Green Party representing a million Canadians -- it guarantees that the old-line traditional parties will never again be able to ignore the issues we are raising.

The fact that Jack Layton and Stephen Harper were working to exclude Elizabeth from the debates was absolutely amazing. It really highlighted the difference between the Green Party and the NDP – while we are a party of principle, the NDP has become a party that is willing to sacrifice principle in the short-term pursuit of power.

At the bottom of this post you can download this blog as an attacment -- very briefly outlining the Green Party's incredible accomplishments in this our best ever election – but I would like to add to this please share email me (at jim at greenparty.ca) the successes in your campaign.

2008 Election Campaign Successes
• We are the only party that increased its vote in 2008! Every other party’s vote fell!

• The Green Party gained 274,855 votes (943/riding) while the Liberal vote fell by 848,724 (-2,717/riding); the Bloc fell 173,544 votes (-2,314/riding); the Conservative fell 167,338 votes (-543/riding) and the NDP fell 72,955 votes (-237/riding).

• The GPC won almost one million votes!!

• The Green Party had the largest popular vote increase (2.3%) – more than a 50% increase over our 2006 election result!

• 41 candidates hit 10% (up from eight in ’06) returning 60% of election expenses to their campaign – see http://greenparty.ca/en/node/8361 (thanks John Northey)

• Five campaigns placed second (up from one 2nd in ’06); and 40 third place finishes (up from two in 2006))

• 249 campaigns (82%) improved their percentage of vote – 26 by 5% or more and six by 10% or more.

• 243 campaigns increased the Green Party vote – 116 by more than 1,000 votes and five by more than 5,000 votes!

• In vote-rich Ontario, the Green Party won 411,512 votes -- 55,500 more than in the provincial election in 2007.

• At the grassroots level candidates are exceptionally proud of their accomplishments – winning debates, getting more volunteers than ever before involved, canvassing, distributing literatures, and having the most number of signs up ever.

• Erich Jacoby-Hawkins in Barrie won the Rogers cable TV debate in his riding and then Rogers replayed the debate 13 times during the election!

• Highest caliber of candidate ever, for instance:

o Peter Ittinuar – former MP running for Green Party in Nunavut

o Dr. Georgina Wilcock, the Green Party candidates in Don Valley West, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada at the Scarborough Hospital where she is the chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

o John Fryer, Order of Canada, ran in Nanaimo–Alberni. John is a renowned labour expert, former General Secretary of the BC Government Employees’ Union and president of Canada’s second largest union. the 350,000 member National Union

o Huguette Allen who has done an amazing job organizing in Okanagan—Shuswap getting thousands of signatures petitioning the BC government to continue allowing the local sale of meat -- see http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/local-meat-BC

o Jacques Legros, an organic farmer in Montmorency-Charlevoix—Haute-Côte-Nord

o Julien Leblanc was who works in media ran for the Green Party in Gaspésie -Îles-de-la-Madeleine

o Sylvie Lemieux, who ran in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell was the first ever female Colonel in the Canadian Armed forces.

o Ralph Torrie, nationally respected energy policy guru ran in Northumberland Quinte West

o Dr Blane Poland in Oakville

In the 2006 election, the Green Party’s best result was achieved by Shane Jolley’s campaign in Bruce Grey Owen Sound – where the Green Party won 12.9% of the vote. In 2008 fourteen candidate campaigns broke this 2006 high water mark:

o Elizabeth May, Nova-Centre – 32.2%, 2nd place
o Dick Himba, Bruce– Grey– Owen Sound – 27.2%, 2nd place
o Mike Nagy, Guelph – 21.1%, 3rd place

• On TV debates for first time ever
o Generating $10 million of free earned media throughout 2008 election – there was exponentially more coverage of the Green Party and its ideas than ever before! This was significant in building the long term strength of the party.

• GRIMES – this is the permanent legacy that will build the party. As one campaign manager wrote to me: “GRIMES is the best tool I have ever received from GPC. It made canvassing easier and E-day ran without a hitch over 2000 calls made. Any one could come into the office and I could have them set up and calling within 5 minutes. It also motivated us to canvass harder to stay in the top ten votes ID’s.”

• Green Party’s first ever airing of TV Commercials – Deputy Leader Claude Genest’s commercials aired in the Westmount by-election prior to the general election

• Won the first week of the eleciton – won debates, won week after debates – highlights: additional TV and Radio presence that GPC had not been given before, ie: TVO the Agenda, CBC national morning Television, Ontario Today phone in

• Rise following the debates unprecedented in Green Party history

• Made history by attracting our first ever MP – Blair Wilson, who crossed the floor from being an independent to a Green during by-elections period. This allowed us finally into the TV leaders debates.

• Raised $800,000 in writ period – we raised almost double what we did during the 2004 ($150,000) and 2006 ($270,000) added together – and we still have more to raise!

• Highest number of women candidates ever for the Green Party

• The Leader’s whistle stop tour on Via Rail which reached 44 ridings was unique in this election – in fact it was a first since Diefenbaker’s time. It was also a first for the Green Party in having the National Media on the tour. As a result we received extensive national media coverage. The tour created a real buzz with the 1,000 supporters participating in Whistle stop rallies – sometimes in the middle of the night such as Melville, Saskatchewan at 4 am, and Saskatoon at 1 am – which created a real buzz with local media at stops across the country.

• As a result of campaigning primarily by trian, the Green Party had the lowest carbon footprint of any of the major campaigns – producing only 2.5 tons vs. NDP highest at 586 tons – some 200 times higher! Wow! Le Parti Vert a connu sa meilleure élection!

Et la chose la plus importante à dire est :
Merci, Merci, Merci à chaque candidat et candidate, aux directeurs, directrices de campagne, à tous toutes les bénévoles, supporters, supporters financiers sans oublier près d`un million de canadiens et canadiennes qui ont voté Vert.

Je suis certain que vous serez d`accord avec moi à l`effet que le Parti Vert représente un million de canadiens et canadiennes et aucun ancien parti ne peut ignorer les préoccupations présentées par le Parti Vert du Canada.

Le fait que Jack Layton et Stephen Harper aient voulu exclure Elizabeth May des débats fut un événement à forte réactions. Nous avons pu voir la différence entre le Parti Vert et le NPD, nous sommes un parti lié à des principes – le NPD est devenu un parti prêt à sacrifier les principes pour le pouvoir à cour terme.

SUCCÈS DE LA CAMPAGNE 2008

-Nous sommes le seul parti qui a augmenté ses votes en 2008! Tous les votes des autres partis ont chuté!

-Le Parti Vert a gagné 274,855 (943/circonscriptios) le vote libéral a chuté de 848,724 (-2,717/circons.) le Bloc moins 173,544 votes (-2,314/circons.) les Conservateurs moins 167,338 votes (-543/circon.) et le NPD moins 72,955 votes (-237/circon.).

-Le Parti Vert a gagné près d`un million de votes!!

-Le Parti Vert a connu une augmentation du vote populaire (2.3%) – plus de 50% d`augmentation à comparer aux résultats d`élection en 2006.

- 41 candidats on eu 10% (8 de plus qu`en 2006) 60% des dépenses électorales remboursées dans leur campagne – voir http://greenparty.ca/en/node/8361 (merci John Northey)

- Cinq campagnes sont arrivées deuxième (en 2006 une 2è) et 40 en troisième place (plus de 2 qu`en 2006)

- 249 campagnes (82%) ont amélioré leur pourcentage de vote – 26 de 5% ou plus et six de 10% ou plus.

- 243 campagnes ont augmenté le vote du Parti Vert du Canada – 116 de plus de 1,000 votes et cinq de plus de 5000 votes!

- les candidatEs de souche sont fierEs de leur campagne, gagnant les débats, attirant plus de bénévoles, ont fait du pointage, distribué de la littérature et un maximum de pancartes.

- Erich Jacoby-Hawkins à Barrie a gagné le débat de Cable TV Rogers dans sa circonscription et Roger a re-diffusé le débat 13 fois pendant la campagne.

Qualité de candidat à la hausse
- Peter Ittinuar – ancien MP – candidat dans Nunavut

- Sylvie Lemieux – première Colonel dans les Forces Armées Canadiennes – candidate Glengary-Prescott-Russell

- Dr Georgina Wilcock, candidate dans Don Valley Ouest, membre des Chirurgiens du College Royal du Canada à l`hôpital Scarborough où elle est gynécologue en chef.

- John Fryer, Ordre du Canada, candidat dans Nanaimo-Alberni. John est président du 2è plus grand syndicat, l`Union Nationale 35,000 membres.

- Huguette Allen a fait un travail exceptionnel d`organisation dans Okanagan – Shuswap- a fait signé une pétition à plusieurs milliers de fermiers biologiques.

- Jacques Legros, propriétaire d`une ferme biologique dans Montmorency-Charlevoix-Haute Côte Nord.

- Julien Leblanc – caméra-man dans Gaspésie Iles de la Madeleine.

- Ralph Torrie, reconnu et respecté pour ses politiques énergétiques dans Northumberland Quine Ouest

Le meilleur résultat du Parti Vert du Canada durant l`élection 2006 a été achevé par Shane Jolley dans la campagne de Bruce Grey Owen Sound- où le Parti Vert a gagné 12.9% de votes. En 2008 quatorze candidats ont dépassé ce pourcentage :

- Générant $10 millions de publicité gratuite à travers la campagne 2008 – croissance exponentielle pour le Parti Vert et ses idées – Essentiel pour la reconnaissance à long terme du Parti Vert.

- GRIMES – héritage permanent à la construction du parti – tel que mentionné par un des directeurs de campagne – Grimes est le meilleur outil que j`ai reçu du PVC - ¨ça a facilité le pointage et le JourE s`est déroulé comme un charme pendant les 2000 appels
Quiconque serait venu à mon bureau aurait pu être à l`aise à faire des appels en 5 minutes. Ce fut une motivation pour travailler encore plus fort et demeurer au dessus des 10 votes identifiés

a écrit que c`est un des 8 candidats à suivre à travers le Canada

- Montée fulgurante historique du Parti Vert du Canada à la suite des débats télévisés

- A marqué l`histoire en attirant notre premier MP – Blair Wilson, qui a traversé la ligne d`indépendant à Vert pendant la période des élections partielles.

Ceci nous a permis d`être aux débats.

- Ramassé $800,000 pendant la période de déclenchement ramassé presque 200% de plus qu`en 2004 ($150,000) et 2006 ($270,000) additionnés ensemble – et nous continuons de lever des fonds.

- Le Parti Vert a eu la plus faible empreinte carbonique de toutes les campagnes – produisant seulement 2.5 tonnes vs. Le NPD la plus élevée 586 tonnes – 200 fois plus élevée! - le nombre le plus élevé de femmes candidates au Parti Vert du Canada

- La tournée en train de la chef a permis de visiter 44 circonscriptions. Ce fut une événement unique - une première depuis l`époque de Diefenbaker. Ce fut la première fois que le Parti Vert était suivi par les Médias Nationaux, ce qui a provoqué une couverture nationale médiatique élargie. La tournée a attiré la participation de 1000 supporters aux arrêts de train - à maintes reprises en plein milieu de la nuit comme à Melville, Saskatchewan à 4h a.m. et Saskatoon à 1h a.m. - créant une attraction pour les médias à travers le pays.
