Women's Council

The Women's Council was established as an official unit of the Party by a resolution passed by members at the 2009 Green Party of Canada Biennial General Meeting.

The Green Party of Canada has also committed to ensuring that 50% of our nominated candidates be women.  The Women’s Council is a vehicle to help us reach our objectives.

The purpose of the Women’s Council is to encourage equal participation of women and men within the Party, to represent and promote the interests of women within the Party and to encourage the active participation of women at all levels of the Party.

Achieving parity in women candidates is a goal founded in the Green Party's constitutionally stated principle of social equity as well as the Global Greens' key value of gender equity.

Our women candidates performed significantly better in the 2008 election. While only 29% of our candidates were women, 39% of the 41 candidates who achieved over 10% of the vote were women; of the five second place finishes, three were women.

Analysis by bodies such as the Canadian Women Voters Congress shows that achieving higher proportions of women candidates requires actively searching for women candidates, supporting the nomination of women candidates and supporting women candidates in elections ( www.womenvoters.ca and www.equalvoice.ca ).
