The case in favour of a basic income only keeps growing.

GLI has been a staple of Green policy for years, but especially in 2020 Greens and Canadians of all political stripes have voiced strong support for a GLI. Awareness around how a program like this would work and its positive impact have garnered so much attention that basic income is now being talked about by the Liberal government.

Now, we need to push the Prime Minister and the cabinet to commit in the Speech from the Throne to introducing a GLI in Canada.

Dear Right Honorable Prime Minister Trudeau and Honorable Ministers,

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed long standing gaps and inequities in our social safety net. Too many Canadians were left behind by emergency assistance programs, and are still suffering. Now is the time for a Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI).
Poverty is the leading social determinant of health. A Guaranteed Livable Income will eliminate extreme poverty in Canada. Too many Canadians are one missed paycheck away from losing the roof over their head. A GLI will reduce homelessness in Canada. A shameful number of Indigenous people on and off reserve are living beneath the poverty line. A GLI will improve the socioeconomic prospects of Indigenous people and other vulnerable and marginalized people in Canada.
Canadians face the uncertainties of a second wave of COVID-19 infections, climate disruptions, and job losses due to automation in the workplace and artificial intelligence. Only a Guaranteed Livable Income can make sure that no Canadian is impoverished by circumstances beyond their control.

The pandemic has changed everything. Canadians like me are ready for big policy ideas, because the status quo does not fit the new reality we are living in.

I urge you to include a commitment to passing a Guaranteed Livable Income in the Speech from the Throne.
