Join us in advocating for Bill C-226. This historic bill, sponsored by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, will help stop environmental racism and promote environmental justice in Canada.
What is Environmental Racism?
In Canada, polluting industrial projects are more likely to be near marginalized communities. That’s environmental racism. It impacts Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities. Environmental racism leads to unequal exposure to pollution and environmental hazards. This increases health issues in affected communities and widens social inequalities.
Why is Bill C-226 important?
Bill C-226 is a proposed law to address environmental racism. The bill would ensure that marginalized communities have the tools and help they need to protect their health and well-being. By supporting Bill C-226, we can help ensure that all Canadians have equal access to a clean and healthy environment.
The Power of Working Together
Bill C-226 originated in the struggles of the African Nova Scotian community in Shelburne and the work of Dr. Ingrid Waldron. The bill was first introduced by former MP Lenore Zann. Its revival and sponsorship by Elizabeth May exemplifies the power of working together. The bill is now in its final stages in the Senate, thanks to the backing of Senator Mary Jane McCallum.
