Do The Math Screenings - Introduction by Elizabeth May & Adria Vasil

Event Description

Do the Math is a documentary produced by 350.org which tells the story of the grassroots movements trying to change the tragic outcomes of climate change and their adversaries in the fossil fuel industry. Using simple math, this film reveals the hard facts about climate change.

Bill McKibbon, a founder of 350.org, states that, “we can emit 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. The only problem? Burning the fossil fuel that corporations now have in their reserves would result in emitting 2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide – five times the safe amount.”

This is your opportunity to learn and ask questions on how you can help Canada develop a comprehensive strategy that unites energy, prosperity, and social justice. Currently, the government of Canada is more focused in building pipelines and staking claims to the arctic waters than in alternative energy sources.

Elizabeth May, a Canadian Member of Parliament, environmentalist, writer, and the leader of the Green Party of Canada, believes that, “Taken separately, we could be fighting over these individual items without resolution. Taken together in a grown up conversation, they all fit together.”

Learn how we as individuals can reduce our carbon footprint in our daily lives. Canadians are big polluters. We produce 20 metric tons of greenhouse gases per capita while other OECD countries emit 12.5 metric tons per capita on average.

Highlights will include Ms. May’s Energy Strategy for Canadians, followed by other guest speakers including Adria Vasil, author of Ecoholic Home and Ecoholic Body, and Milan Ilnyckj, President of Toronto350.org.

Toronto350.org’s main project is the campaign to cut off the oil industry’s financial and political support by divesting our schools, churches and government from fossil fuels. For more details, please visit: www.GoFossilFree.org.
