OTTAWA – Following a successful appeal, the Green Party of Canada has reinstated Meryam Haddad as a contestant in the Party’s leadership contest. Ms. Haddad was informed that she had been expelled from the contest by the Leadership Contest Authority on Tuesday following inappropriate endorsements and comments. The Leadership Contest Committee took into consideration mitigating circumstances when accepting Ms. Haddad’s appeal.
“I can confirm that the leadership contest will enter the final stretch with eight contestants remaining on the ballot,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts.
“The Green Party is proud to have attracted a slate of contestants with diverse opinions from across the political spectrum. Participatory democracy is one of our core values and that means giving priority to our members’ right to decide.”
Online voting begins this Saturday and ends on October 3, 2020 at 6.30 p.m. EDT. This has been a spirited contest with high caliber contestants competing to replace former Leader Elizabeth May.
The Green Party uses a ranked ballot system, and members are encouraged to rank all contestants to ensure their vote is counted at each stage. The new Leader will be announced at a live event in Ottawa on the evening of October 3.
