OTTAWA — Green Party leader Elizabeth May will attend the Climate Strike in Montreal Friday, when tens of thousands of young people will join #climatestrike movement founder Greta Thunberg to demand immediate and drastic action on the climate crisis.
Insisting that the climate crisis requires a coordinated non-partisan effort, Ms. May is calling on Andrew Scheer, Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh and Yves-François Blanchet to go to Montreal and march side-by-side with her in the event, demonstrating to Canadians that their leaders can come together and show unity in the face of this unprecedented threat.
“This crisis is more important than partisan politics,” she said. “Regardless of parties, regardless of this election, we need to stand together and proclaim that the status quo is over. Let's be sure our children know there is an adult in the room. Let's stop debating what is possible and start doing what is necessary."
The Green Party platform proposes creation of an inner cabinet, with members from all parties working together towards addressing the climate crisis.
The Future of Canada
The Green Party’s platform contains pledges to end all fossil fuel subsidies, establish a cross-party cabinet set on solving the climate crisis and move Canada to a zero-carbon economy by 2050. The party has a set goal of reaching the Paris targets, and limiting the increase of Earth’s temperature to under 1.5 degrees C.
The Greens are the only party that has promised to meet the targets recommended by the UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change. The Green plan leverages renewable industries as massive economic growth sectors. It will also invest in new training and retraining programs and social services to ensure a smooth and just transition from the old economy to the new.
