Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Wilkinson,

Canada needs a climate plan to match the scale of the climate crisis.

While the pandemic is rightly in centre focus, we have what it takes to face down the pandemic and the climate emergency together. We cannot afford to forget the climate crisis because it has not forgotten us.

Canada has the opportunity of a lifetime to invest in a post-pandemic Green Recovery with solid and actionable measures to cut emissions. This will simultaneously create the jobs we need, secure our economic future, complete our social safety net, and help our country do its fair share to combat the climate emergency.

Canada needs a real climate commitment, laying out concrete actions the federal government can take to ensure collaboration across party lines, and we are proposing the bold, ambitious solutions this emergency requires.

Canada needs:
-A 60 per cent reduction in emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 with clear enforceable targets and timelines, starting in 2025.
-A detailed Carbon Budget setting out GHG emissions allowed to keep within the 1.5 degrees C threshold.
-A Carbon Border Adjustment – a tariff on imports from jurisdictions with weak climate policies.
-Investments in renewable energy and cleantech.
-Deep energy retrofits of buildings.
-A national electricity corridor allowing 100 per cent renewable energy to flow across provincial and territorial borders.

Scientists continue to warn about the accelerating pace of global warming, yet Canada has never met its emissions reduction targets and still does not have a climate plan bold enough to do what is necessary to halt rising global temperatures.

We now have the chance of a lifetime to bring about a Green Recovery. We also have a responsibility to do our part and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, meet our Paris commitments, and lead by example with climate action and integrity.

We cannot miss this opportunity to invest in a better and healthier future.
