Green Party of Canada Stands in Solidarity with CUPW: Calls for Innovation and Fairness at Canada Post

OTTAWA — The Green Party of Canada (GPC) stands firmly in support of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in its current strike and calls on the federal government to respect workers’ rights by refraining from introducing back-to-work legislation.

The union, representing over 50,000 postal workers, has demanded fair wage increases, improved job security, and essential benefits like paid sick days and enhanced disability payouts. CUPW has also highlighted Canada Post's need to modernize its operations to remain viable, including adopting bold and innovative solutions through its Delivering Community Power proposal.

“Canada Post plays an integral role in our country, especially for rural and remote communities,” said Leader Elizabeth May. “The Green Party opposes back-to-work legislation that infringes on workers’ rights and calls for new leadership at Canada Post to work collaboratively with CUPW. The union’s proposals for innovation, like postal banking and a renewable energy fleet, align with our goals for a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving postal service.”

The GPC is particularly supportive of CUPW's Delivering Community Power initiative, which outlines transformative steps to make Canada Post a driver of social and environmental change:

  • Transitioning to a renewable energy postal fleet with charging stations at post offices.
  • Introducing postal banking to serve rural and underserved communities.
  • Enabling mail carriers to check in on seniors and people with mobility challenges.
  • Using post offices as community hubs for digital access and innovation.
  • Consolidating last-mile delivery to reduce congestion and environmental impact in urban centres.

“These proposals aren’t just about keeping Canada Post afloat—they’re about reimagining its role in our society,” added MP Mike Morrice. “From reducing emissions to serving vulnerable populations, CUPW’s vision demonstrates how Canada Post can contribute to tackling the climate crisis and supporting underserved communities. The government should embrace these ideas instead of dismissing them.”

The Green Party of Canada urges the federal government to prioritize meaningful negotiations and innovative solutions over legislative measures that undermine workers’ rights. It also calls for a renewed focus on ensuring that Canada Post remains a valuable public service for all Canadians, especially in rural and remote areas.
