Guy Rainville, the vice president of the Green Party of Quebec won the leadership contest Saturday March 28 to become the new leader of the party.
He won in a close race with the outgoing leader, Scott McKay -- 268 votes to 225 votes.
On behalf of Greens all across Canada, I want to express my deep thanks to Scott McKay for his years of service as leader.
Scott led the party through it's largest ever growth phase, from being the sixth party in the 2003 election to being the fourth largest party in 2007.
In 2003 the PVQ ran just 37 candidates winning 16,975 votes -- or roughly 460 votes per candidate.
Under Scott's leadership the party ran 108 candidates -- almost a full slate in Quebec's 125 ridings -- winning 152,885 votes -- almost 10 times as many as in 2003 -- and more than tripling the average vote per candidate to 1,415. This was exponential growth!
