Green Party Statement on the National Flag of Canada Day

OTTAWA – Statement by Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands, on the National Flag of Canada Day, 15 February 2014:

“49 years ago today we witnessed the birth of our most important national symbol.

“The story of the red and white Maple Leaf flag is particularly powerful given today's harsh and intensely partisan political atmosphere. It is a story of perseverance through trying times to adopt a symbol that defines our nation and represents unity, freedom, and peace to Canadians and the world.

“It is important to remember the perseverance Canadians have shown in coming together to resolve difficult and divisive issues, to find unity in purpose and pride.

“Our flag and its Maple Leaf connect us to nature. Its bright red colour evokes our forests in fall. Canada, perhaps more than any other country on earth, is defined by its wilderness. Our arts, culture and values are tied to nature itself. More than conflict and empty jingoistic rhetoric, Canadians have been shaped by geography and ecology.

“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I wish everyone a happy National Flag of Canada Day.”
