OTTAWA – The sighting of tonight’s crescent moon will usher in the holy month of Ramadan. For Muslims in Canada and around the world this is a sacred period of fasting, spiritual reflection, prayer and community.
“This year’s COVID-19 physical distancing protocols will make it more difficult for people to gather for prayers and the sharing of communal meals, as is the custom during Ramadan,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “Traditionally, friends and families share a meal each day before sunrise - suhoor – then break fast together with the evening meal – iftar.
“I hope that families and communities will be able to find new and creative ways to gather during this time of reflection and heightened religious observance.. While not ideal, video and social media platforms offer a way of connecting to loved ones and spiritual leaders during special religious observances.”
“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I wish all Muslims peace and happiness during Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!”
