The Green Party of Canada Statement on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada extends warm wishes to Quebecers and all francophone Canadians, for a joyful Fête nationale du Québec and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. On June 24, Canadians from coast to coast to coast celebrate Quebec and French Canada – the language, the history and the culture.

"During this national holiday the resilience of the Quebec nation is being demonstrated more than ever," said Deputy Leader of the Green Party Daniel Green. "Despite the challenges of these difficult times, we are determined and united. We have always fought to preserve our language and culture. And now we are struggling with our sisters and brothers to keep us all healthy.  Yes, it will get better... one day, we just have to persevere; that's what Quebecers have been doing for over 400 years.”

"I offer my best wishes to the people of Quebec on the occasion of the celebration of the Fête nationale du Québec. Your unique cultural heritage and identity enriches the country's mosaic,” said Jenica Atwin (MP, Fredericton), Green caucus official languages critic.

"I would also like to warmly acknowledge the many francophone communities across the country that are also celebrating Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day; in Ontario, through Acadia, the Northwest Territories and Manitoba – in all provinces and territories across the country, we are celebrating.

“At the same time, I would like to take a moment to highlight the historic judgment handed down by the Supreme Court of Canada on June 12, which recognized that the educational experience of young francophones must be equivalent to that of the majority. I welcome this victory, which marks a major gain for the vitality of the Canadian Francophonie.”

“This will be a rather different Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day celebration due to the ongoing physical distancing measures in place, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 pandemic,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “Despite this, we hope that Qubecers and francophones across the country will be able to gather outside, and enjoy the festivities.”
