OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada thanks Canada’s paramedics for their selfless service and acknowledges their courage and dedication. The theme for this year’s Paramedics Service Week, Paramedic as Educator – Citizen Ready, highlights the important role that paramedics play in educating the public.
“Even under normal circumstances the work of paramedics is often stressful and demanding, but the COVID-19 pandemic has elevated the level of risk they encounter and exacerbated existing challenges,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul.
“Paramedics have been on the frontline of this health crisis since the beginning, responding not only to emergency calls, but also working at testing sites and vaccination clinics. In addition to the many work-related risks, the frequent interaction with the public during this health crisis has constantly exposed them to the danger of contracting the coronavirus. It’s crucial that all health-care professionals receive the best personal protective equipment (PPE) and we must work to strengthen health and safety measures including ensuring easy access to mental health supports. The emotional toll of this work cannot be overstated.
“I would also like to acknowledge and remember all the paramedics who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Their service must never be forgotten. We are deeply grateful to all the frontline health-care professionals: the paramedics, the first responders, the emergency medical staff and the dispatchers. The people who protect and care for us must also be protected.”
