(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada welcomes Lorraine Rekmans as the candidate for the new riding of Leeds – Grenville – Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.

“I am really pleased to see that Lorraine Rekmans was nominated as the candidate for Leeds – Grenville – Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “Lorraine’s knowledge of issues facing Canada’s Indigenous communities, including the plight of missing and murdered Indigenous women, makes her an exceptional candidate.”

Rekmans is a small-business owner and volunteer Chair for the Grenville Centre for Social Studies. She is also the Green Party Critic on Indigenous Affairs. In the 2008 and 2011 federal elections, Lorraine Rekmans ran as the Green Party candidate for Algoma – Manitoulin – Kapuskasing.

Rekmans said she would work towards concrete solutions for Indigenous peoples, especially regarding the loss of rights when moving off-reserve and honouring treaties with Indigenous communities.

“Various levels of government must co-operate to address the many disparities affecting Indigenous peoples in Canada,” concluded Rekmans. “We must honour the treaties and enact the principles enshrined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.”
