Barbara Joannette was born in the beautiful city of Québec, where she spent most of her youth and the early years of her adult life. Since high school, she has had a keen interest in science, a passion that led her to earn an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Biology as well as a teaching certificate for college and high school levels from Université Laval in Québec. She later completed a minor in History at Université de Montréal.

Always drawn to science and nature, Barbara is also passionate about horticulture and studied for three years in Horticultural Production Technology and Environmental Studies. She has worked in this field for over 20 years, both in private companies and at the municipal level.

Barbara’s strong interest in politics emerged when she helped create a municipal political party. She ran for mayor with her team in the 2017 municipal elections in La Prairie, securing over 30% of the vote. Among other commitments, her party pledged to save the beautiful ecosystem on the La Prairie golf course from destruction by transforming it into a protected provincial park. This diverse ecosystem includes century-old trees and countless species of animals, insects, birds, and fish. This initiative became the cornerstone of her party’s conservation efforts. It also aimed to revitalize the former brick factory into a natural park, featuring a lake for aquatic recreational activities, an archaeological fossil research site, and a science and health centre.

Barbara is excited to share her passion for environmental sustainability in the fight against climate change on a national scale. She looks forward to working with residents across the La Prairie riding to build a better future together.
