Affordable
Housing
We will make the largest investment in public housing since the 1970s, and clamp down on big investors driving up prices.
Learn MoreEnvironmental Advocacy & Education
Michael has been involved in environmental activism since high school, where he co-founded the first Environment Club and launched a paper recycling program.
He holds:
– A B.A. in Sociology from Brock University
– A Prairie Horticulture Certificate from Olds College
– A Permaculture Design Certificate
Michael was a founding member of the Edmonton Permaculture Guild and worked alongside permaculture expert Ron Berezan. For ten seasons, he worked on organic vegetable farms in the Edmonton area, selling bedding plants and organic produce at the 104th Street Downtown Farmers’ Market.
Personal Life & Challenges
Injuries from motor vehicle accidents and, more recently, the impacts of long COVID have limited Michael’s ability to work full-time. However, he is a trained Suzuki Method Classical Guitar teacher and enjoys playing music with his students and his 14-year-old cellist daughter whenever possible.
Since moving to Alberta in 2005, Michael and his family have been living in and transitioning to a 1954 bungalow in Beverly Heights—which has been net-zero since December 2023! They are dedicated to growing and preserving food alongside friends and neighbours.
Most recently, his family replaced their last fossil fuel-powered vehicle, a 19-year-old Prius, with an electric vehicle (EV), which they plan to drive across the country to visit family.
Political Involvement & Commitment to Climate Action
Michael has been actively involved in Green Party politics, both federally and provincially, as a volunteer and as a candidate in the 2019 and 2023 Alberta provincial elections in Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview.
The past year’s unprecedented 12+ months of breaching 1.5°C—years before predicted—has galvanized him to step forward again. He is proud to run for the first time in a federal election, advocating for rational, science-based legislation that aligns with IPCC recommendations.
