OTTAWA - Elizabeth May's defence of Canadian sovereignty and message to President-elect Donald Trump were delivered at the Parliamentary Press Theatre on Friday, January 3rd. Subsequently posted on a number of US social media sites, it has now gone viral. No other Canadian leader has as directly reached the American audience, with over 700K views on Occupy Democrats via Youtube, re-postings on Twitter gaining over 7.5 million views, Instagram reels gaining over 2.9 million views, and other Youtube coverage, including global news sources, gaining a combined 3 million views.
On January 8, Elizabeth May's January 3 response to President-elect Trump was featured on US news Channels CNN and Fox news, as well as in the media in the UK and Mexico.
"While watching as homes and neighbourhoods in the L.A. area go up in flames, my heart breaks for them. Yet, the idea of responding to Mr. Trump's outlandish and outrageous claims that he can "erase" the line on the map that makes us a sovereign nation makes news in Canada, it is California that needs our help now. Never forget the testimony of Canadian best-selling author of Fire Weather John Vaillant to the Natural Resources Committee last year: "The oil industry is a fire industry." To protect our economy, our people and ecosystems from the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, we must pull together as economies and nations to save lives by rapidly moving away from fossil fuels," said Elizabeth May.
Meanwhile her response to the absurd suggestion that Canada should be the 51st state by offering California and other blue states the opportunity to become Canadian provinces hit a receptive chord globally."The alignment of bullies and petro-states is alarming. Healthy democracies do not cower when threatened. We stand firm and with a shared commitment to our neighbours and friends. No matter what the President-elect may post on his social media pages, Canada will always be one of the best friends and neighbours the US and its citizens have ever known. Sometimes we need to remind them of that fact." said Ms. May.
