OTTAWA – Jonathan Pedneault and Elizabeth May, co-leaders of the Green Party of Canada, are issuing a strong call to action to protect Canada’s sovereignty, jobs and economy against the growing threat posed by the United States under the leadership of Donald Trump. The Green Party is committed to safeguarding the freedoms and democratic values that Canadians have long fought for. Now more than ever, it is crucial for all Canadians to be prepared to defend those values, our homes and way of life.
“Over 45,000 Canadians gave their lives during World War II to defend the very principles that define us as a nation—freedom, democracy, and justice,” said Elizabeth May. “Now, we face a new threat from the south. The rise of fascism within the United States under Donald Trump is a grave danger, not only to Americans but to all who hold democratic values dear.”
The Green Party recognizes the current US administration as a serious and existential threat to Canada. With Trump’s dismantling of democratic institutions, his authoritarian leadership style, and his endorsement of far-right ideologies globally, the Green Party believes Canada must act decisively to protect its sovereignty, security, economy and values.
Jonathan Pedneault expressed deep concern about the US’s positioning towards Canada, stating, “The United States is no longer an ally; they have become a threat. Canada is at risk of becoming the target of an authoritarian regime intent on undermining our democracy, our freedom, and our way of life. We must stand strong and defend what is ours.”
The Green Party has outlined a series of concrete measures to protect Canada’s national security and sovereignty, including strengthening diplomatic relations with like-minded democracies, divesting from US-owned defence and IT-system acquisitions, ensuring Canada’s defence posture reflects current threats, and safeguarding our economy and jobs from US economic aggression, while ensuring these measures directly benefit workers and families as opposed to large corporations and conglomerates. Furthermore, the Green Party calls for urgent action to defend Canada’s borders, protect Canadians from foreign disinformation, prevent US and other external actors from meddling in our elections and secure our natural resources and industries from US interference.
“We must prepare for the worst, while also showing the world what it means to stand up for the values of justice, equality, and freedom,” said Jonathan Pedneault. “Our response to this growing threat must be swift, coordinated, and unwavering.”
The Green Party’s proposed measures include the creation of an “economic NATO” of like-minded nations to counter any encroachment on sovereignty, a diplomatic offensive to heighten Canada’s profile abroad, and strengthening economic, legal and defence policies to staunchly safeguard Canada’s jobs, industries, resources, media, borders and infrastructure from US interventionism.
As a final call to action, the Green Party urges all Canadians to stand united in defending Canada and our sovereignty, jobs, democratic rights and values. “Just as pulling together in the Second World War transformed the Canadian economy, our self-reliance now can remake our national project. We can emerge from the Trump threat as a more self-reliant, self-sufficient and prosperous economy, built on greater cooperation between and among all orders of government – federal-provincial-territorial, local and indigenous, ” Elizabeth May concluded.
